Quick question!
I am 23 and both of my parents live with me. My dad is diabetic and has insulin reactions often. This morning, he had a reaction and wouldn’t drink any milk to bring up his blood sugar. He was getting really mad at me and even though I knew he would never hit me, it almost felt like he would. I started crying and told him to drink the milk and quit being a jurk. I got really impatient and it is possible that I didn’t have the best thoughts about him. I love my dad very much and in the heat of the moment I lost my temper. My mom came in and made him drink the milk and then she said that he is ruining my life and that if he didn’t shape up, she was going to get a divorce. I don’t want them to get a divorce and I am sure I wasn’t thinking very good thoughts at that point as well. I immediatly sat down and started praying to God to give me the strength to honer my parents and to not lose my temper, but some times it is so hard. It seems that now that I am regaining my faith, everyone wants to bring me down. Anyway, to make a long story short, am I allowed to reveive communion? Please pray for me. Thanks.

It sounds like there was a lot of emotion around and you were reacting to unreasonable behaviour to your kind act.
It sounds as if conflict may not be unfamiliar in your family, and you’re not resonsible for discord between your patents or for any decisions they make.

Just try the best you can to be kind and charitable, and look after yourself, in being charitable to yourself as well as them. God grant you grace to keep trying to act lovingly even with provocation

You haven’t sinned in a way that prevents you from receiving Communion, and you repent any fault.

God grant you peace and a happy life 🙂

please be understanding, it is your dad’s fault but part of it is due to the diabetes. When we get low blood sugar we go through a mood change, cranky, bitter, even nasty, defiant, anxious all the worst emotions. Just think of it as the disease talking, not your dad. Your mom was just using language she thought would do the job to get him to comply with what he needed to do. She has been dealing with the disease and has some strategies. Maybe not the best, but she is trying as hard as she can.

Suggest, when things get calmer and more rational at home, that you yourself could benefit from more education about diabetes so you can be of more help, and ask if the 3 of you can visit the counsellor or nutritionist together. It will show you want to be part of a team to help your dad, not his adversary.

just remember none of this is your fault, you did not cause the disease, you cannot make your dad follow his management plan, so you don’t sin when you do your best in these situations, so don’t beat yourself up

Doesn’t sound like you did anything wrong. Like Trishie said, it sounds like a lot of emotions running high. I would not sweat the Communion question. Go.

Thanks everyone for your kind and reassuring responses. God Bless!! and have a Merry Christmas!! 🙂
