A question came up in a discussion recently, and I wasn’t sure about the answer. Naturally, I am turning to this forum to ask it 😛

Can a baptism or confirmation sponsor be the spouse of the person receiving the sacrament? And could the two be married after the sacraments are received?

Thanks,

In the Latin Rite Church under the current code of canon law (1983), the answer is yes.

Under prior codes in the Latin Church, and under the current code in the Eastern Rite Catholic Churches, the answer is no. It used to be an impediment to marriage in the old code for Latin Catholics, and still is for Eastern Rite Catholics

Thanks, I appreciate it. Do you happen to know the source for this? I tried finding it, but I haven’t had any luck.
