My sister passed away in 2011. She had a Vigil service and Funeral Mass at that time. My nephew kept her ashes in an urn at his home. It was a delicate situation, but I mentioned to him from time to time that, because of her strong Catholic faith, I felt she would want to be buried in a Catholic cemetery. Recently, he came to that same realization.
She will be buried next month in my Church’s cemetery and I have arranged a graveside ceremony with a priest presiding. The cost for the burial is $300, which goes to the parish. I’m having a Mass said for her that day and the cost for that is $10. My question is, how much do you think is an appropriate stipend to give the priest for a graveside service? It’ll be a very small group (maybe 4-5 people) and I’m also inviting everyone, include the priest if he doesn’t have another commitment, to have a meal afterward at a local restaurant.
When I had my marriage convalidation, which was also very small, I gave the priest $50 and was thinking this service would most likely be a similar in length and preparation.
