Can one be invested in the brown scapular while being in a state of mortal sin?

i guess but why would one in mortal sin wish to be invested in the scapular, which is a sign of ones love and devotion for both God and His blessed mother, if they obviously do not even have that love for God in their heart to avoid offending Him by committing something as hideous and offensive as a mortal sin? (wow that was a long sentence). a mortal sin totally separates one from God and kills the soul so i think that being invested in the scapular would be the last thing on the persons mind. not trying to be judgemental or anything and i apologize if it sounds harsh but its the truth. mortal sin hardens the heart and completely cuts one off from God and His graces.
But i would first go to confession and be re-opened to Gods graces before i received and became invested in the “garment of grace”

But what about the person who makes a true contrition but doesn’t get the chance to go to Confession?

Now we are getting to the meat of it. While if it is just them “not having the chance” it is one thing. If it is an act of their will not to go, with full consent…The promise was made.

What!!??

Everyone was thinking it!!!

No? 🤷

OK jokes aside
Of course - this is a faulty logic I would not want to fall into. Bad for judgment day. Still, would the promise be valid in said situation?

I personally think that since the promise was made - they would get purgatory.

Then again, I am not an expert… any experts want to reply?

I am no expert FaithInTheLord, but I have been invested in the brown scapular for over a decade.

I think the op is asking the wrong question. I think he/she should ask , “How does the brown scapular devotion help keep us from hell?” Or something similar. Key word is devotion.

Let me try to explain my experience and maybe it will help.

I was invested in grade school but I did not understand the implications as well as I should. I thought it was a get out of Hell free card. I was desperate to hold on to my sins and tried to keep it and the scapular.

If you have this disposition like me you will stop wearing the scapular out of guilt or you will return to God. Why? I believe because Mary is constantly praying for you when you wear this scapular.

And what happened to me was I became devoted to praying the rosary. I realized it power and its significance and how it will help me.

I didn’t stay on the course sadly but returned much later on and now wear the brown scapular again proudly and with gratitude.

I guess what I’m saying is it seems to be an amazing promise that overrides God’s rules but it is not. Will those that are obstinately in mortal sin be wearing the brown scapular at their death? I doubt it.

So I guess in a nut shell, we need to offer something ourselves as a devotion. We will be changed not the rules.

All those wearing the brown scapular should pray the rosary everyday or a similar devotion. I recommend it especially for sins against purity.

They say that one can not both pray the rosary and hold on to their sin. Either they will try to stop sinning, or they will stop trying to pray the Rosary.

I guess the same could be said for this.

Beautiful. 🙂 Yes.

“The Rosary and the scapular are inseparable!” -Sister Lucia of Fatima

Here is something I was looking for :

“No special daily practices are obliged, though someone consecrated to Mary, of which the scapular is THE sign, should live chastity according to their state and recite the rosary daily.”

ewtn.com/expert/answers/brown_scapular.htm

I find this significant for me because before I knew about this I was drawn to the rosary anyway.

And this too is helpful : olrl.org/pray/rosary.shtml

Thank you for the links.

I was not aware that the scapular was THE sign of Mary.

Are we talking about someone committed to remain in mortal sin? why would they want to be invested in the brown scapular?
Are we talking about someone who is planning on taking the first available opportunity to go to confession? Then maybe they could.
