Question re job application

I saw a job and suspected I knew the hiring manager. I do not have direct experience but I have a lot of transferable skills. I also know this person has struggled with employment and can sympathyse with someone who has to take a job below their education to pay the bills.

I emailed him my resume and asked if he was indeed the hiring manager. He replied saying he was and he would forward my resume to HR. I must admit, I was disappointed. I was hoping for a ‘thanks I would love to interview you’

So my questions is: ‘Could there perhaps be a company policy where he can NOT comment about the position?’ ‘Is it possible that even if he did want to interview me, he can not tell me and must go through HR?’

Your friend, if he is smart, will play it “by the book” to avoid any hint of favoritism in hiring you. As he knows you, he may put in a good word for you, but I would suggest you maintain a strictly professional attitude in communicating both with him and with HR.

If he is the manager in charge of hiring for this position it is possible that telling you he would send your resume to HR means he is telling them to look at you for the position. Many companies use several stages in their hiring process and getting through after submitting your resume is step one. I will pray for you as you wait for the answer and see if you are in line for the next step.

Absolutely. I suspect that HR will choose the most promising applicants and your friend will do the actual interviewing. Hopefully, he turned it in and told them that this was the best choice he has seen yet.

Possibly, but it doesn’t really matter. Don’t overthink it. You had a hope for that little morsel, but having that little hope realized is not a necessary prelude to getting hired. If he had said it, after all, you could just as well have wondered if the answer was pro forma. Let it go, prepare for the interview, and be ready to show your suitability for the position to best advantage.
