Question Re. LOTH (Christian Prayer) BVM on Saturday

On the optional memorial to BVM on Saturday, is this just for the morning?

Today is the first time I have done the optional memorial for BVM (I know, I know…🤷) and it seemed to go straight into Sunday Evening 1 of the four week psalter for this evening prayer.

Is this correct or am I missing something or doing something incorrectly?

Just use the BVM for the morning office only on Saturdays in Ordinary Time.

Yes, it is only for the Morning Prayer (and the Office of Readings, for the 4 volume). This is because it is observed with the rank of an (optional) memorial and so Daytime Prayer is taken from the weekday, and Evening Prayer from the Sunday, since Sundays outrank memorials.

That said, there is a prayer at Daytime Prayer (I think Midafternoon, maybe? or perhaps its Midmorning) that mentions our Lady. I often use that as a way of “extending” the commemoration of our Lady to the Daytime Prayer.

Yeah, it’s Midafternoon Prayer where the Collect references Our Lady. I often use it too!

Well technically to pray the Liturgy of the Hours correctly for a memorial (optional or otherwise) one uses the ferial office of the day including the daily collect. The memorial is not otherwise recognized at mid-day. The exception would be if you chant the Office in Latin. The words of the hymn for the mid-day office are the same for a memorial as for an ordinary day, but the tone is slightly more ornate on a memorial (and more so for a feast, Sundays and solemnities). Which is how I do it.

That said, there is always the Angelus which can be prayed after the Office at appropriate times of the day (in our abbey, after Vigils, Sext and Compline in choir and at other times privately).

I realize that, but we were talking about the fact that, in Ordinary Time at Midafternoon on Saturdays, the ferial collect happens to reference the Blessed Virgin. So when we choose which of the Daytime Hours to pray, we can specifically choose Midafternoon as a way of unofficially extending the celebration of the Saturday Office of Our Lady, while actually just praying the prayers according to the rubrics.

Does this make sense?
