My 28 yr. old daughter who has never been baptized, due to my own negligence, is very interested in the Catholic religion and feels ready to learn and join the church. She has a 16 month old daughter and wants to have her baptized also. This may have to do with her seeing me return to the church after a long absence.
My question is this - “Where does she begin and how can I help her?” I have been going to Mass regularly and she comes along. She is hoping to get in the next round of classes at our parish.

Any helpful suggestions are appreciated.
TIA,
Phil

Yes she needs to go to RCIA classes, which around where I live usually begin in Sept. But going to talk to a Priest would be helpful. When she goes through RCIA, she will be baptized, recieve First Communion, First Reconciliation, and be confirmed. All of this usually takes place at the Easter Vigil.

As for her daughter, one parent needs to be Catholic in order for the child to be baptized Catholic (I’m pretty sure), so if not… Then she will have to wait until she becomes Catholic, but again talking to a Priest would be most beneficial.

Tell her I congratulate her on her journey home to the church! Definitely give her this website so she can come on and ask questions!

She should talk with the pastor or RCIA director. They can give her information about RCIA in general and how it works in that particular parish. Continue praying for her and supporting her and she takes these steps into the Church.

I think I have heard of families getting baptized at the Easter Vigil. So I think if she is not allowed to get her baptized yet, her daughter will be baptized during the Easter Vigil with her. 🙂

+As a church secretary for 20 years or so during the years my children were growing up . . . my recommendation is that you call the church office directly . . . and make an appointment specifically to see the priest . . . and make him your first contact . . . he will have all the information you need at his fingertips . . . and he will be the best guide among his parishioners in each of the areas you have questions, etc. . . . *plus it’s nice to meet and get acquainted right off with your priest . . . *

God bless . . . and welcome home . . .

:harp:
I will be glad and rejoice in thee:
I will sing to thy name, O thou most high.

Psalm 9:2
. . . all for Jesus+
. . . thank You Dear Lord+

Not Reconciliation. Baptism will wash away all the sins she’s ever committed and she’ll be Confirmed within minutes and receive Communion within the hour.

Oh, but from that moment she will be able to begin going to confession, correct?

Yes, after that she’ll be expected to go to confession as needed, confessing grave sins at least once per year.

Hi!

I got a similar question i am currently in RCIA and about to be baptized at easter vigil.

Due to circumstances that we in sweden have only one bishop who can not be in many places simultaneously my confirmation will be delayed till june or september depending which parish i choose to be confirmed in.

This is because the RCIA is in another parish than the one i belong too because my parish is small and has not RCIA classes so they sent me to the other parish.

My question is will i be able to recieve communion after the baptism or must i wait until my confirmation?

Thanks

Yes, you will receive Communion that night and may receive it from then on.

I’m surprised they are delaying Confirmation though. The priest who baptizes at the Vigil normally also confirms those he’s baptized precisely because the Bishop can only be at one place that night. I remember a town where 3 parishes combined for the Vigil and all the elect were baptized & confirmed in that one parish.

Well we have changed priest and the new one is not quite familiar of how adult baptisms is done, anyhow tonight i am meeting my class and i will clarify those questions with the deacon who is the RCIA teacher.

Another problem is that my sponsor is ministrant in my parish so he must attend the masses at my parish so the possibility to be baptized in the RCIA parish is quite small.

We have a meeting with the bishop at february 21 for the Admissio i guess thats when he gives permission for us to be baptized isnt it?

She should make an appointment and ask about RCIA. She can also then ask about having the child Baptized. It may be possible to have this completed well before she is Baptized, since you yourself are a practicing Catholic and are in regular contact with your grandchild.

Hi again, as i said i will ask the deacon and so i did, this is what he told me:

“Usually every adult who is baptised also recieve the eucharist and the confirmation at the same time, this is according to canon law, but if there is a good reason the confirmation can be post poned and we in our diocese has decided that it is very good for the elected to be confirmed by the bishop himself so that they will know him personally, so therefore we delay the confirmation.”

And yes Phemie, you were right, i will recieve the eucharist at that time.

you are probably quite right that your good example is bearing fruit. Yes encourage her to make an appointment with the pastor and discuss her own baptism and sacraments, and baptism for the baby. Most parishes should accept an inquirer like her at any time during the year, although she may have to wait a few weeks for formal class to begin. In any case she will be taking some classes or instruction to have the baby baptized, which is a great place to start and a great intro.

Welcome home to all, what immense blessings are in store for your family, all because you made the move back to Mass and sacraments.

yes I don’t know how they do it in Sweden, but if your bishop has reserved confirmation to himself, then yes it may very well be that you are baptized and receive first communion at the same time in your parish or another nearby church, and then gather with the other newly baptized adults for confirmation with the bishop at a later date. From the time of your first reception of communion you will be expected to confess all your grave sins at the earliest opportunity.

Please ask these questions of the people instructing you, since only they can tell you exactly how things are done in your area, and that is the point of RCIA, to ask questions.

Welcome Home!

I did ask today and it seems like the bishop has reserved the right for confirmation to himself, it is the diocese of stockholm which practically means the diocese of Sweden since there are no other catholic dioceses in this country.

We did agree today me and the deacon who holds the classes that i will be baptized in my home parish, since the classes is not held in my parish, and then join with the group for confirmation in june,

You mentioned confession of grave sins, i assume that mean sins commited after the baptism, since there is no need to confess sins prior to the baptism.

Do you mean that the confession should be made just before the confirmation?

Yes, I did mean sins committed after baptism.
As for going to confession before you’re confirmed, that would be a good thing since there will be a few months between your baptism and your confirmation.
