A few weeks ago, I was under a lot of stress because of various personal issues. To make matters worse, my beloved cat got away from me and disappeared into a thicket of bushes. I became desperate when I couldn’t find him and began to wonder if God was punishing me because of a particular thing that I had done. However, I quicky reconsidered this because I know that what I had done was morally right. After a little while, I found my cat and thanked God profusely. My question is: Was it sinful for me to temporarily (and irrationally) think that God was punishing me?

Based on the simple presentation you gave, it seems to me that you were only wondering and wondering in an irrational way. While doubting God can be a very grave matter, Wonder seems not to be serious matter and irrationally wondering seems not to be full intention to doubt God. So it does not seem that a mortal sin would be involved.

I don’t know the minimum measure to qualify as a venial sin. But if you think you came close to mortal sin, then I’d be safe and mention it in Confession.

I think a more important pre-disposition is realizing that God wants to love us, not punish us.

When things are stressing up, we should know that God loves us and we should pray for His Wisdom and Patience. Choosing this positive approach in all things and asking for God’s Help in all things, helps we resist going negative and thinking God is trying to punish us in various ways.

Our personal love of God never doubts God’s never ending love of us.

Glad you asked. And welcome to Catholic Forum !

I have read someplace something to the effect that* A thousand doubts do not make a heresy/denial*. I think it is the same for a sin. One is always free to doubt, but probably one is obliged to pursue the doubt to a resolution.
