Question Regarding The Last Supper and Judas' & Peter's Sins

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about receiving communion in mortal sin and am wondering how Judas and Peter were both able to receive the body and blood of Christ when Yeshua, Himself, foreshadowed their mortal sins? Thanks in advance for any and all responses!

Matthew 26:20-27

*20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”

22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”

23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”

Jesus answered, “You have said so.”

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.*

Luke 22:31-34

*31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”*

Peter had no intention of doing that at the time, but Judas did…so Peter was not in mortal sin at the time but I dunno about Judas…

Interesting point about Judas … he certainly seems to have had the intent at that moment … but was the intent itself sin? Or was it what the Church ordinarily calls “concupiscence,” which is the cause of sin but not sin itself?

But as for receiving the Eucharist: was what Christ gave at the Last Supper His Body & Blood, or was that meal only a prefigurement of what was to come after? I had the idea that the Eucharist only became Body & Blood after His physical body was crucified.

Well, that would make sense. The institution of the eucharist was not full until the crucifixion, as it is the Unbloody sacrifice.

I think you’re part right. The Eucharistic sacrifice was not complete until Calvary, but the institution of the Eucharist and the crucifixion are not really two separate events, it is the beginning and the end of the same sacrifice. I think the Passover bread indeed became his body when he spoke the words of institution.

True. And, I suppose, if we can partake in the future because it is outside of time, I guess they can partake in an outside of time sacrifice in the PAST…
