Question regarding vows

Let’s say I vow something to God for a miracle like curing my pet dog. Canon 1197 says a person who did the private vow can commute it into a greater or equal good. If God cures my pet dog, would it be sinful to change the vow I had vowed to an equal or greater good? E.g I vowed not to see the movies anymore, can it be substituted into something like an extra rosary daily?

Thanks pianistclare. Yes, I’m aware of that now. I was rather new to the Faith still (I had been a lukewarm Catholic for many years) so I wasn’t all too sure about promises and vows. I’ve been dispensed from it but still have doubts on whether I’m bound to keep this vow as I did not explain the situation clearly to my confessor

If I were you, I’d look at canon 1196, and then go and talk to your local pastor.

That can yes be good advice.

But the “should only” in not the case - it can be advisable though (and especially for some…such as those who are new to things and do not understand vows or are prone to scruples or who might start taking too many vows etc).
