I’m trying to decide who my patron Saint is going to be, I really want to pick a well-known Saint who I’ll be able to do loads of research on and even easily find a medal representing them so I can carry them around with me.

I’d like to pick a Saint who has shown perseverance, as I had a bit of a hard time of it living at home but managed to pull through and move out. I also had to fight a lot of negativity and criticism when I chose to become a Catholic.

I’m training to be a nurse, so a Saint who has some relevance to healthcare/caring for the sick would be good also. I would also prefer a female Saint as I feel I could relate to them more, and I would prefer to have a female confirmation name.

So far I’ve found St Therese of Lisieux - she showered perseverance in trying desperately to join the Carmel. She died of illness early in life so has some relevance to the sick also. But she doesn’t fit into healthcare very well. I have a question about her though - why are there so many posed photographs of her?

Another Saint I like is St Christopher, my mother and her grandmother both had a great love of the Saint, and both of them owned medals of him despite not being Catholic. My mum wore one when she was in a car accident and survived, so has several medals of him now.

I did have a thread (I think) about this a while ago and I settled on St Christopher, but I would prefer a female Saint, and when I heard about St Therese of Lisieux I found her very interesting.

So basically my questions are -

Is your patron Saint’s name your confirmation name? (I think so but I’m not sure.)
How often do you use your confirmation name if its different to your birth name? (If a Saint’s name does become your confirmation name).
What role does a Patron Saint have within my life?
Do most people pick a Patron who is the same gender as them?

I picked St. Joseph as my Confirmation name. The reason I picked St. Joseph was because he is the best father figure anyone could have…He is also the patron on the Church. I picked him because a priest in Confession told me that St. Joseph could help me overcome certain sins. My sister and I both picked male Saints…My sister picked St. Micheal.

It usually is.

Basically you can share your confirmation name with others, but it is not used on a daily basis.
What role does a Patron Saint have within my life? .
You want a saint that you will want to pray to through out your life. But you can pray to different saints for different problems.
Do most people pick a Patron who is the same gender as them
.
Most people pick a saint with the same gender, but you don’t have to.

Congratulations on joining the church!

Thank you, I am very happy to be finally becoming a fully-fledged Catholic this Easter 🙂

I’ve been reading about St Faustina, I’m considering having a special devotion to the Holy Souls in Purgatory - they were handing out booklets today in Church which came with a special Holy Souls rosary and a book containing several different novenas as well as a few chaplets and prayers to several saints.

I quite like Catherine of Sienna though too. I think perhaps this is something I’m going to have to pray about to help me decide.

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla is a recently canonised saint who was a paediatrician. She died after refusing to undergo an abortive procedure which would likely have saved her life. Instead she chose to save her daughter’s.

She died in the 60’s and was canonised in 2004 so I shouldn’t imagine information would be hard to find.

Camillus de Lellis founded an order dedicated to helping the sick and dying, and it took a few times before his conversion took.

While you can’t change your confirmation name you can add patrons. I chose Therese, too, but now I might choose Maxiillian Kolbe. I find him more accessible than Therese. It’s like she’s been a friend longer but I know Max better.

Thank you everyone! I am still trying to decide but I will keep you posted!

We can have patron saints now?

St. Bernadette (lourdes) might be a good one.
She was sickly all her life.
She was considered slow (stupid) but the BVM appeared to her.
Initially, no one believed her and people activly tried to interfere with her visits to the grotto.
The Goverment brought ressure on her, her family, her priest and others to stop her visitations.
When she wnt to the convent, she was never to go home again.
Her mentor while she was a novice was envious of her.
She suffered and died of bone cancer but no one noticed until it was well advanced because she wouod not complain of the pain.

As to the other questions:
A patron saint can be any saint you feel attracted to, whose life resonates with yours.
My confirmation name is the name if my Confirmation sponsor because when and where I grew up, that is how it was done.
I have 5 names and only really consider 2 of them as patron saints.
It is not uncommon for a patron saint gender to be differnt than the person patronized.

I know this was a hard one for me too!

I just couldn’t decide, myself! I had a real connection to St. Cecilia mostly out of music…I had a music teacher once give me a medalion when I graduated High School…I was heading off to college in music. I still have that medallion. She also happens to be the first saint (besides Mary) that I prayed to…and ultimately had a wonderful experience after doing so.

On the other hand, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of information or writings about her. I have been taking this confirmation name thing seriously…I really wanted to take a name that would reflect the me I am becoming…I wanted to find someone that I could continually study over time, and even relate to! I did a search on a few topics and came up with a few names that I started to narrow down.

In the end I kept coming back to Catherine of Genoa. Then I couldn’t decide “Which of these two to pick?” So asked someone if it would be ok to somehow combine these two names, come up with a new one. That was my initial thought…but in the end I decided I wanted to keep both names, hyphenated.

SOoooo, Catherine-Cecilia it is (A friend of mine says he plans on teasing me by calling me CC). Whatever. I realize this makes my name really really long…but the only thing this is used for is our own personal use, right? And Catholic records?

I’m still a bit confused on the technicals myself.

Hope you came up with someone! 🙂

aww

when i converted i was the only catholic in my family ( i was 18) and my mom said that she wouldnt attend my confirmation if i took a saints name, as venerating the saints was invoking the dead.

so i didnt have one, though i narrowed it down to St Maria Goretti (purity) and St Juan Diego (converted the indians in Guadalupe). will it make any difference that i dont have a confirmation name? i feel sad now

I’m not going to have anyone attend at the moment 😦 boyfriend refusing to go and family live too far away.

At the moment it’s trying to decide between St Therese, and St Faustina. I prefer St Faustina though, patron Saint of Mercy, because I would like to have a special devotion to the Holy Souls.

Don’t let your boyfriend refusing to go stop you or your family being too far away.

St Faustina was 33 when she died, the same age as Jesus.

Do you have this book?

He’s my informal patron saint. I’m a nurse and female. He could be argumentative and so can I.😃 We even have the same birthday.

I never made my confirmation but will do so on the next go around of classes. St Camillus will be the saint I pick.
