Hello all,

I have some questions about confraternities.
  • What exactly is a confraternity?
  • What does it depend on? (Diocese, universal Church,…)
  • What are the requirements of being able to become a “confriar”?
  • Are there female equivalents? What are they called?
  • What is an archconfraternity?
  • Are they still active and founded these days?

This is the governing Canon Law

Can. 215 The Christian faithful are at liberty freely to found and direct associations for purposes of charity or piety or for the promotion of the Christian vocation in the world and to hold meetings for the common pursuit of these purposes.

They make their own bylaws

Synonym name is Sodality, used for female associations.
