In the movie, both John and Peter referred to the Blessed mother as “mother”…why?

I used to hang out at a friends house all the time, so much so, that I started calling his mother “mom” myself.

“… behold thy mother; Woman, behold thy son.”

they called her mother prior to this point, on a couple of occasions. I can’t figure out why.
