A few years ago, I asked a priest to enroll me in the Brown Scapular, and I printed off a prayer online that had the prayers said by the person and the priest all typed out . I printed it off for him just incase he didn’t have the prayers memorized. He read his part and I read my part. Now I’m just wondering if that is enough for enrollment in the promises of the Brown Scapular. Does anyone know? And I believe he used holy water as well.

I also heard that the scapular needs to be blessed, and I don’t remember if my scapular was blessed before I was enrolled. Or does the enrollment process itself bless the scapular?

You may want to search the Forum, this has been covered before.

You can have it done again some time, if it is really bothering you.

I went to a Carmelite shrine, and had it done by a Carmelite priest. He read a couple of small parts out of the official Cathesis and Ritual manual. Sprinkled us with holy water, and we were done. It was in the Narthex of the church before weekday mass. I know the manual he used well, because I bought a copy of it prior to attempting to getting enrolled. I was going to ask my pastor to do it for us.

I saw that the parts he read were highlighted excerpts from the ritual. What I mean is, he did a very abbreviated version. It kind of bothered me afterward. I wondered if it was enough. I got over it. I’m sure it was enough, and that he knew what he was doing. It’s the good intention that matters.

This is what the priest said. I got it from “The Sisters of Carmel” website. Now the only thing that is bugging me is that I’ve heard that you have to used a blessed scapular to be enrolled. As I recall, I purchased a new scapular to use, so it had not been blessed prior. However, maybe the enrollment itself blesses the scapular?

Oh, as far as I know, scapulars come unblessed. Yours was probably blessed at the time of the ritual. Subsequent scapulars you obtain afterward need not be blessed.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking…that the words the priest says of the enrollment and the short ritual itself blesses the scapular.

“THE PRIEST SPRINKLES WITH HOLY WATER THE SCAPULAR AND THE PERSON(S) BEING ENROLLED.”

I quoted that from what you posted. It sure sounds like he’s blessing the scapula AND the person.
