Are we supposed to strike our breast when we say “through my own fault”?

Also, are we supposed to cross ourselves at the end when the priest says “May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, etc.”?

Yes to both questions!
“that I have sinned exceedingly, in thought, word and deed.”( here strike breast three times)
“All cross themselves as the priest gives absolution.”

As far as I know, the striking of the breast is in the books, (ie, you should really do it) but the sign of the cross is a personal piety (ie, it’s good to do, but not necessary)

The new translation is going to make this SOOOO much easier!
  1. “Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grevious fault” is coming back (along with the breast-striking)
  2. The sign of the cross made is still optional, but now the presider says “May Almighty God have mercy on us and lead us, with our sins forgiven, to eternal life”.

. . .

I think it has been discouraged in many documents lest people think it equivalent to absolution in Confession. However, 65+ years of habit out weighs a lot of documents; so I usually do.

Yes, I do. Will be glad when the new missal comes out. For the first time in decades I getting alittle excited.

Ok, thank you! I’m excited for the new translation, too. :bounce:

I just hope all the priests implement it correctly. I know my pastor will, because he does things to the letter, but it is nerve-wracking going to other parishes … sometimes they change the words in the Mass so much. I see so many differences too in the lay gestures at different parishes, as a new Catholic it’s hard to know what I am supposed to do and what not. So thanks for helping me.

Neither the Roman Missal nor the GIRM mentions the Sign of the Cross being made when the priest says the “May Almighty God have mercy on us…”

The Sign of the Cross that is made during the Extraordinary Form of the Mass is said during a different prayer which is not present in the Ordinary Form.

But yes, you are supposed to beat your breast during the Confiteor.

Because the New Mass says nothing about the sign of cross after the Confiteor, doing it is a bit like adding something to the Mass (even if it is tradition and a good thing. In the TLM, the sign of the cross, I believe, occurs on the next line after the priest says, May Almighty God… so inserting it into the NO at that line seems kind of silly.)

This might be a stretch, but ever since I read about this being nowhere on the books in Jimmy Akin’s Mass Confusion, I [edited] cannot bring myself to do it whenever I’m at a Novus Ordo. Whether tradition or some crazy liberal invention, we still can’t add something to the Mass where it’s not supposed to be there!!

When we make the sign of the cross in the EF, the priest is saying
Indulgentiam, `†´ absolutionem et remissionem peccatorum nostrorum, tribuat nobis omnipotens et misericors Dominus.
Which means
P: May the almighty and merciful Lord grant us pardon, †´ absolution, and remission of our sins.
It is the altar boy who says the amen.

I cannot WAIT for the new translation to be implemented!
Our bishop recently used it at an ordination, and it sounded a million times better, and sounded much more sacred and putting the emphasis on the sacrifice.
