Good morning all,

I am new to this site. I tried to search the forums box but there was just a lot of posts. I apologize for asking this question which probably has been asked a million times over. 🙂

I was reading Mark Chap 1:12 regarding the temptation of Jesus, and 1:35 where Jesus prayed.

The church teaches Jesus is 100% God and 100% Man correct?

If so who is Jesus praying to? I am sure you have all been asked this so sorry for the duplicate. 🙂 really appreciate the time.

Also, if Jesus is God how can he be tempted?? I don’t know the verse in the bible but I though God could not be tempted.

Thanks a million for your help. I am just one lost soul looking for some light at the end of the tunnel.

Anthony:)

We believe in trinitarian monotheism. Simply put, we believe that there are three separate Persons in One God.

God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Jesus (God the Son) was obedient to God the Father. Jesus became Son of Man / Son of God to fulfill God the Fathers’ convenant with all of His people.

Jesus prayed to His Father.

Each “Person” in the Godhead, contains the same “Essence”.

In his humanity, Jesus who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet He is without sin… [Heb 4:15]

The passage(s) you are thinking of is

Lk 4:12
And Jesus answering, said to him: It is said: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God

Dt 6: 16
You shall not put the LORD your God to the test,

Catholics believe that there are three divine person (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) who share the one divine nature. The three divine persons can be collectively addressed in prayer as God or individually as God.

When the Bible mentions the person to whom Jesus was praying, it always says he was praying to his Father, the Father. Although it is possible that he was praying to the Holy Spirit in this instance in the desert, it is likely that here too he was praying to the Father. Of course, since Jesus is the Son, he wouldn’t be addressing himself in prayer.

When we say that Jesus was tempted by the devil, we simply mean that the devil propositioned Jesus. We don’t mean that Jesus gave any serious thought to any of the devil’s propositions and sinning because Jesus could not sin; his human will was always perfectly aligned with his divine will; he could never be successfully tempted to sin.
