Do you have to be in a state of grace to pray for the souls in purgatory?

If it’s common to say the “souls” in purgatory why? why is it souls and not soul in Purgatory? How do we know there’s multiple souls in purgatory and not just one?

How do we know if there’s any souls in purgatory?

Do you think its okay to add the eternal rest prayer for souls in purgatory in the Rosary?

Prayer being non-meritous does not mean God does not hear it

To obtain an indulgence for those in purgatory the Catholic must be in a state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. The indulgence has added value for those it is done for, in addition to that value of the indulgenced act itself, and this is added by the Church.

I would think God would want to hear the prayers from mortal sinners the most.

I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

842 Can. 32. If anyone shall say that the good works of the man justified are in such a way the gifts of God that they are not also the good merits of him who is justified, or that the one justified by the good works, which are done by him through the grace of God and the merit of Jesus Christ (whose living member he is), does not truly merit increase of grace, eternal life, and the attainment of that eternal life (if he should die in grace), and also an increase of glory: let him be anathema [cf. n. 803 and 809].
