I have some questions about the Catholic church:
  1. Why does the Church teach that his name was Jesus and not his real name?
  2. Why does it teach that Jesus was born on Dec. 25?
  3. Why do they think that this is the Church Jesus made?
  4. Why do they teach the Trinity?
  5. Why no birth control after marriage?
 
Well, I’ll do my best…
  1. It doesn’t. The Church teaches about the Messiah through the languages of the people it preaches to. To Spaniards, He is “Heysoos” (Jesus), to the English He is “Geesus”(Jesus), to the Hebrews He is “Yeshua” (don’t have the Hebrew alphabet), and to the Latins He is “Eeaysoos” (Iesus). To ALL people, however, He is the Messiah, promised to Israel and all mankind through the Prophets, the Eternal Son of the Eternal God, Emanuel (“God With Us”). The way we say His name is unimportant compared to the Truth we convey about Him. The Church doesn’t “teach” us how to say His human name; we say it based on the language in which we are speaking.
  2. It doesn’t. We remember His birth on December 25. We don’t know the actual date of His birth, nor do we claim to. We simply commemorate it on that particular date. By my understanding, the reason for choosing that date was in order to guide Christians to pious activity on a day that was given to pagan celebrations. Christians couldn’t engage in the pagan celebrations of the surrounding culture if they were busy celebrating Christ’s birth. In fact, the celebration of the birth of Christ was not initially done in the Church at all, but came up some centuries later.
  3. This is actually the easiest question to answer. Jesus gave authority to the Apostles, who ordained successors, who ordained successors, ect. The Catholic Church (and the Orthodox) can trace their Bishops in lines of ordaination back to the Apostles. Our leaders are, in fact, the people chosen by the people chosen by…the people chosen by the Apostles. It is plainly obvious in the writings of Scripture that the Apostles were working on such authority, and it is plainly obvious in all writings by early Christians that the Bishops were viewed from the beginning as the inheritors of this Apostalic authority. The Catholic Church has simply always honored the role of the Bishops, and therefore can trace itself back to the very Commission described in Scripture.
  4. Because Jesus did. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” - Matthew 28:19. Notice it says “name” and not “names”. God is the Father, God is the Son, and God is the Holy Spirit, as Jesus stated.
  5. This is actually a deep and rich theological question that is currently being thoroughly and thoughtfully explored. The simplest answer, however, is this:

    26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

    27 So God created man in his own image,
    in the image of God he created him;
    male and female he created them.
    28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." Genesis 1:26-28
The very first command God EVER gave humanity, the first man and woman, beings made in His own image, was to be fruitful and multiply. It is written into our very biology, and it is the first directive God gave us. “Birth Control” (a denial of both birth and self control) is an affront to the first words of God to humanity, and an affront to the very biology God built us with.

These answers were brief, but so were the questions. If you want further clarification, I’ll be happy to give it.

Plus, St. Paul under divine inspiration said to gird our loins with the truth; he didn’t say to gird our loins with latex 👍 .

#3. See Matthew 16:18-19. In Jesus OWN WORDS He said He would build His Church on St. Peter ( Simon Bar Johna - Kephas- Petros = Peter). There is no question about this, even the Protestant Bible says the same thing. But they misread it.
 
1.Because we do not speak Hebrew but English. The NT was translated into Greek. In the Greek his name was Isous. The Anglo Saxon name is Jesus. Yes, Jesus was actually called Yahshua in the Hebrew, but we call him Jesus in english. Just as in Japanese they would call him a different title in their language.

2.Jesus wasn’t born on the 25th and no one knows the exact date. We simply acknowledge his birth as a glorious event and are grateful for that. Imagine if Jesus would never had been born? We be hell bound for sure.

3.Because the Catholic church teaches and follows what our Lord and the apostles told us to do.

4.Because scripture reveals that there are three persons in the bible called the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and that each of these persons are called “God”. The scriptures also reveal there is only one God. So the scriptures and the church properly teaches that there are three persons in one God or God in three persons, blessed trinity.

5.The church does not hold to birth control, because one praticing birth control deters from the chance of bringing forth life and anyone who prevents life from coming forth, commits grave mortal sin, which in essence is murder.

It sounds as though your are being led by the nose by an anti-Catholic apologist. What I suggest, is that you control the conversation. You are not, in my opinion, competent to defend the faith without first understanding what it is YOU believe and WHY you beleive it. I’m thinking you have not really sorted this out in your own mind. Consequently, you ought to probably cease discussions with your anti-Catholic antagonist and take the time to study the Catholic Faith as it is taught by the Catholic Church. If you have difficulties with what you discover, then I recommend you ask questions of those on this forum, but tackle one issue at a time thoroughly before moving on to another issue.

The Catholic Church offers many ways to learn about her teachings. It is unwise to rely upon the opinions of non-Catholics or ex-Catholics, as their views you must admit will be rather biased.

I suggest you learn about Catholicism from Catholics who faithfully and joyfully practice the Faith.

Have you read the Bible? If not, you ought to. Not straight through in one sitting, as you will likely not be able to. But read it everyday for 30 minutes, starting with the NT, then the OT (may as well start with the good news). 😉

Have you read the Catechism of the Catholic Church? If not, this is the best compendium of Catholic teaching that you will find. Many of your questions are answered in the Catechism. Catholic doctrine may seem overwhelming to you if you try to answer every question at once. You need a more methodical approach or you will wind up being rather frustrated. Read the Bible and the Catechism every day. As you do so, ask questions about it on this forum. Being led away from the Church by a wolf through a barrage of questions is exactly what your antagonist is counting on. Dont’ play his game, but fortify your faith by resolving to know Catholic teaching as presented in the Bible and the Catechism.
