Good day all and God bless.

Tomorrow I plan to go to mass before work to receive ashes for Ash Wednesday. I was wondering about how long to keep them on the forehead. I have a meeting at 10, and was wondering what CCC says about removing them if anything at all.

Thank you

The Church has no teaching on how long the ashes should remain. Leave them all day or wipe them off. It is up to you.

I don’t believe the CCC says anything, but the whole point of ashes are for public marking of a season of penitence… Why reccieve them if you’re going to take them off?

Peace be with you. You have no obligation to keep them on for any time, you could technically rub them off immediately. They are however a sign of your Catholic faith, and that you are a Catholic. They show the world that you are practicing your faith and that you are attempting to fulfill your Lenten observances.

It is up to you what you want to show to those in the meeting.

Good priest told me, if you really want to wear your ashes all day you should wipe them off. On the other hand if you are uncomfortable wearing them, you should wear them.

More Protestants are getting them also.
True, but you can always witness given the opportunity, if someone mistakes you for Protestant. The vast majority would recognize it as a Catholic practice.

Because I’m in law enforcement, and my “meeting” is not so much a meeting as it is something else.

Hey no worries! Truth be told, I’m a cradle Catholic who came back home about 4 months ago. Since then I go to confession twice a month, never miss Sunday mass, and try to go to a weekday mass as often as I can. If I can’t make it I try to go into a church and pray. I pray the rosary on my way home from work as a practice, but I know there’s much much more I need to do for our Lord, to give him the Honor and attention he deserves. That’s why I wanted to ask about ashes.
