Quinceanera incorporated into the Mass

Gowned, with her attendants wearing wrist corsages and escorts wearing white carnations in their lapels, Alicia celebrated her 15th birthday with her “quinceanera,” where she publicly reconsecrated her life to God with the blessing of her family and friends and her church family. Part of the ceremony took place in the Mass proper, and the celebration continued in the church hall. The godparents were first quizzed as to her fidelity to the faith, then her parents as to her loving nature, then there was a short renewal of baptismal vows and her pledge of fidelity. This little loyalty oath may have come from the after-effects of the centuries-old Muslim occupation of Spain. Please pray for this lovely young lady, her family that includes selfless catechists and Catholic activists, and our little church and the people of St. Ann’s in Independence, MO who revived the Holy Name Society and will be going door-to-door to invite people into closer union with the Body of Christ.
 
At our parish, all Quinceaneras are in a Mass. Some parents want just a blessing and then on to the party but our pastor won’t allow that.

Hey Corki,

At what point in the Mass does this happen and is it okay to incorporate things like this into the Mass?
 
What a beautiful blessing! I hope it catches on outside of the Hispanic community.
 
It’s done all the time in the TX/MX region, and has been done since at least the 1980s, when I first saw it.

In more than 30 years, if there were anything wrong with it, someone would have long since called foul.

We had one in my parish during Mass not too long ago–it was a first and was lovely. It just so happened that one of our priests used to pastor an Hispanic parish and was very familiar with it, so he took some time to explain things. I doubt we will see another one for a very long time, there are not many Hispanics in our parish, and there is an Hispanic parish in the area. It just so happened that the father of the girl was not Hispanic, and the family attends our church and decided to have it in our parish. I think half the congregation of the Hispanic parish was at Mass that day.

I loved the music, as the musicians from the local Hispanic parish played and led the singing. A really wonderful experience.
 
I will join everyone in offering prayers for this young woman and her family!!! 🙂
