Is it common for churches to raffle off cars and such? Ours is doing it, I guess as a funding event for our new RCIA building.

They need to have someone from the parish, usually a car dealer, who’s willing to donate a car. So it’s not always common, but it’s not unheard of either.

Reminds me of an old joke about a bishop who called in three priests, each the pastor of a different parish in the diocese. One was a Jesuit, one was a Dominican, and one was a Franciscan.

The bishop said, “Great news! One of the most prominent citizens in the diocese has decided to donate three new Lexus cars, so I have decided to call for a Novena of Thanksgiving and at the end then raffle the cars off, and YOUR parishes were chosen for the raffle”.

The Franciscan said, “What’s a Lexus”? "The Dominican said, “What’s a raffle?” and the Jesuit said, “What’s a novena?”

Just make sure that everyone understands the rules.

The biggest is who will pay the prize taxes?

Yes, I have seen this plenty of times. As Bear said someone donates the car, and the church/organization/school benefits. I think the the taxes are the responsibility of the winner.

OP, I see the car is a 2017. While it is still new, that might be the reason the car is available for use. If I went to that parish, I would buy a ticket for sure! 🙂
