“And she tied the scarlet cord in the window…”
Joshua 2:21

Is this verse a type of the virginity of the Blessed Mother? The rest of the book of Joshua seems full of typology.
Many thanks!!!

A “tyoe” is a person, place or event in the Old Testament that foreshadows something in the New Testament.
Sometimes Old Testament types are dubious examples of New Testament characters. For instance, Samson and our Lord. I thought I caught a glimpse of the Salvation narrative in Rahab hiding people, etc…
She is also mentioned in the book of Hebrews as a “hero” of the faith. She is also part of the lineage of Our Lord.
Many thanks!!!

Rahab’s house is a type of the Church, as St. Cyprian explains, since by being outside it, one is condemned:
  1. For the faith of the sacred Scripture sets forth that the Church is not without, nor can be separated nor divided against itself, but maintains the unity of an inseparable and undivided house; since it is written of the sacrament of the passover, and of the lamb, which Lamb designated Christ: In one house shall it be eaten: you shall not carry forth the flesh abroad out of the house. Exodus 12:46 Which also we see expressed concerning Rahab, who herself also bore a type of the Church, who received the command which said, You shall bring your father, and your mother, and your brethren, and all your father’s household unto you into your house; and whosoever shall go out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be upon him. Joshua 2:18-19 In which mystery is declared, that they who will live, and escape from the destruction of the world, must be gathered together into one house alone, that is, into the Church; but whosoever of those thus collected together shall go out abroad, that is, if any one, although he may have obtained grace in the Church, shall depart and go out of the Church, that his blood shall be upon him; that is, that he himself must charge it upon himself that he perishes; which the Apostle Paul explains, teaching and enjoining that a heretic must be avoided, as perverse, and a sinner, and as condemned of himself. For that man will be guilty of his own ruin, who, not being cast out by the bishop, but of his own accord deserting from the Church is by heretical presumption condemned of himself.

Do you think that you can stand and live if you withdraw from the Church, building for yourself other homes and a different dwelling, when it is said to Rahab, in whom was prefigured the Church, Your father, and your mother, and your brethren, and all the house of your father, you shall gather unto you into your house; and it shall come to pass, whosoever shall go abroad beyond the door of your house, his blood shall be upon his own head? Joshua 2:19 Also, the sacrament of the passover contains nothing else in the law of the Exodus than that the lamb which is slain in the figure of Christ should be eaten in one house. God speaks, saying, In one house shall you eat it; you shall not send its flesh abroad from the house. Exodus 12:46 The flesh of Christ, and the holy of the Lord, cannot be sent abroad, nor is there any other home to believers but the one Church. This home, this household of unanimity, the Holy Spirit designates and points out in the Psalms, saying, God, who makes men to dwell with one mind in a house. Psalm 68:6 In the house of God, in the Church of Christ, men dwell with one mind, and continue in concord and simplicity:

Thank you Genesis! Very helpful!
Is there any commentary on the meaning of the scarlet cord?

The color of the cord is probably meant to evoke the blood that stained the lintels of their houses on Passover. The Israelites left Egypt on that Passover and entered Canaan when Rahab put out her cord.

I think we can assume ,it’s Christ on the Cross tied to the tree or Cross as he shed his blood for us as the Crimson or scarlet cord, we have look for.

You won’t find a better response to this than Genesis315’s. 👍

Some more reading that sources the St. Ambrose passage: Br. André Marie, “Is the Church a ‘Harlot’?” 28 Jun 2008 Catholicism . org

Any typological meaning of the cord, however, seems it would just be speculative. For instance, apparently there are those who claim the red cord is related to the practice of “red-light districts.”
