Raising the paten or bowl, not the host

During the weekday Masses our Priest slightly elevates the silver bowl with the broken hosts, for the faithful, in it. It is for a small gathering so he breaks a larger host up into this bowl prior to this slight elevation.

Am I missing something ? I thought we were to be able to adore the host visually.

Thank you.

I’m guessing that it’s neither of these, since he mentions “broken hosts”, which would seem to imply that he’s talking about GIRM #84 (following the fraction rite):

“the Priest shows the faithful the Eucharistic Bread, holding it over the paten or over the chalice, and invites them to the banquet of Christ”

So, the priest should hold either the host and the paten or the host and chalice. It would be unfair to speculate – if he’s not doing so – why he’s doing something different. I don’t have an old Sacramentary handy – is it possible that its specifications at this point in the Mass are different from the current GIRM?

If I understand the OP’s inquiry correctly, what happened is that the priest breaks the presider’s host in half when he gets to, “…He broke the bread” and then at the elevation, the priest lifts the paten/ciboria with the hosts and presider’s host instead of just the normal, unbroken presider’s host. The OP is asking if the later, the elevation of the paten/ciboria by the priest instead of the presider’s host is licit.

Concerning the raising of the Host at Communion time, I know I did not make myself very clear.

At no time is the Host made visible to the faithful. The ciborium holding the pieces of
the Host is all that is seen.

Thank you.

By “communion time” it seems you are talking about when the Priest says “Behold the Lamb of God.”

The rubrics from The Order of Mass in the Roman Missal are:
“132. The Priest genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the paten or above the chalice, while facing the people, says aloud:
Behold the Lamb of God,”.

Thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut. The Priest holds the chalice and the ciborium up but I have never seen the Host. The broken Hosts are in the ciborium.

Maybe what is being done is okay, but I never noticed it before at other church’s.

Thanks again.

No, it definitely seems to be outside what the rubrics call for. Have you considered asking your priest why he holds up the ciborium, and not a piece of the host?

Gorgias
Thank you for the reply.
I am new in town and trying to decide which parish I and my wife will join. I am just trying to get to know this Priest and parish, but I have reservations. I am a stickler for following ALL the rubrics, no more, no less, but I am not a professional at this. I mean no disrespect for any Priest but just want what the Church determines what should be done at Mass.

Thanks again. I love this organization !
