While I was driving to work this week, there was a banner across the street proclaiming “Ramadan Awareness Week.” It got me to thinking how I might get the Gainesville City Commission to promote a “Lent Awareness Week”, or an “Advent Awareness Week.” Of course, this being a liberal college town (University of Florida) all the ACLU lulus would come out of the woodwork screaming about the Separation of Church and State. This town also has a Gay and Lesbian Pride Week; I wonder what they’d think if I started a petition for a Chastity Pride Week?
Is it just me, or does it seem that ‘tolerance’ these days means ‘tolerance for everything but Christianity or Christian values?’ I mean, it’s okay for the city or university to recognize a Muslim holiday, but it’s ‘against separation of church and state’ to display a manger at Christmas?
I’d like to hear other thoughts or opinions on the subject.
