Academic and media inquiries are daily occurrences at many of Nevada’s 27 legal brothels. Some shy away from the scrutiny, others, like the Chicken Ranch, welcome the publicity.

“We’re always open to trying to educate the public about legalized prostitution,” said Chicken Ranch general manager Debbie Rivenburgh, who acknowledged this was the first class tour request she’d received in 21 years.

The brothel tour was a natural fit for a class that tells students “don’t just study America - live it,” said Julio Rodriguez, the director of the college’s American Culture Program…

As part of their research, students were assigned “The Beauty Myth,” by feminist author Naomi Wolf, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” by Hunter S. Thompson, and a “20/20” episode on prostitution with Diane Sawyer, among other research, professors said.

I think that the trip is a good thing. To a lot of Americans (myself included) prostitution seems like a far away problem. I’ve never seen anyone working a street corner or anything of the sort. I think by showing those young adults that yes it does exist it makes them more aware of the problem. Talking to actual prostitutes would be an invaluable experience to not only understand why those women do what they do but also to bring the issue close to home so maybe someday it’ll be more likely that something will be done about it.

This is a high priced call girl ranch. It is nothing like what you would see in any major city. The girls are on the streets dress in similar fashion with very short skirts and so forth.

I want them to hear about drug use and HIV rates.

That is not at all what this course was about. Look at what they had to read - feminist Naomi Wolf.

Gam197, I agree with you that the experiences of prostitutes at a legal brothel is probably very different from the experience of most prostitutes in the US.

Plenty of interviews with prostitutes are already available, many available on the internet. I don’t see this class trip as any more educational than the trip they took to Disney World.

But I am not sure what you object to in the Naomi Wolfe quote.

Naomi Wolfe’s comment-ironically enough-makes young girls nothing more then sexual objects. because I am familiar with the author, I understand that wasn’t her intent, of course.

Just imagine how differently a young girl today might feel about her developing womanhood if every routine description she heard of female genitalia used metaphors of preciousness and beauty, and every account of sex was on her pleasure - pleasure on which the general harmony depended.

Why focus on the girl’s genitalia and not her big toe for example? Are there numerous young women running around in America ashamed that they have vagina’s? If not then why treat a vagina any different then an armpit or elbow? Unless of coarse you think that a young woman is not a complete person but just that her sexual parts are her most important asset. That seems sexiest to me.
