Mary is the Mother of God so she is high in rank above the angels and saints and even the Apostles
Gen 5:24; Heb 11:5; 2 Kings 2:1-13 … Enoch and Elijah taken to heaven.
Lk 1:28 … annunciation.
Lk 1:42-48 … blessed are you among women.
2 Tim 4:8, Jas 1:12, 1 Pet 5:4, Rev 2:10 … coronation awaits saints.
Jn 2:1-5 … Mary’s intercession.

1 Corinthians 12: 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles(POPES), second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, then healers, helpers, administrators, speakers in various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts.

And I will show you a still more excellent way.**
Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, 3 the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and designated Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ;
7 To all God’s beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints:Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

GOD has choose Mother Mary before the foundation of the world to be his Mother and our Spiritual as well
John 9:31 says we know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his will. Which Mother did, co-operated by doing His Will in Luke 1:38. Lk 1:28, 30 – angel: “full of grace, found favor with God Lk 1:42 – Elizabeth: “most blessed among women” Lk 1:48 – Mary: “all generations will call me blessed” Mother of God Lk 1:43 – Elizabeth calls her “mother of my Lord” = God.

. Mother Mary being the Mother of God, How much more powerful will be, her intercession before God .AS she was born without original sin and she was sinless throughout her life, who bore sufferings, being Holy, assumed into Heaven Body and Soul ,in John 2:2-5 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” .Thus even thought it was not the appointed time and note many places in the Bible Jesus done everything on the appointed time as per the will of God, but Through her intercession she quickened the miracle and everyone’s surprise and everyone glorified Jesus and they believed John 2:11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Luke 1:28 And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. Mother Mary is without a single stain of original sin, throughout, so being the Mother of God, who is full of Grace, is most powerful intercessor , before God to prayer for us, we sinners. The Holy Spirit Himself is speaking through St Elizabeth and testifying about Mother Mary.

Luke 1: 41 And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 42 And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy = sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. 5 He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8 which he lavished upon us. 9 For he has made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of his will, according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fulness of time, to unite[d] all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

11 In him, according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 we who first hoped in Christ have been destined and appointed to live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

Revelation11: 19 Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant =(The Ark of the covenant Mother Mary) was seen within his temple; and there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.

The Woman (Mother Mary) and the Dragon = satan

Revelation 12:1-2 A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman (Mother Mary) clothed with the sun (Glory Wisdom 7:26 For she (Mother Mary) is a reflection of eternal light=Jesus John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”, a spotless mirror of the working of God, and an image of his goodness.), with the moon under her feet (Power given to Her in the Church By Jesus on the Cross the last Treasure and the most important before his death only then he could finishes the will of God ), and on her head a crown of twelve stars (12 Apostles and the 12 Tribes of Israel) (Queen of Heaven also Co -redeemer). 2 She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pangs, in the agony of giving birth.

Two different ranks entirely.

The saints are the souls in Heaven. Mary, the Mother of God, is often considered the greatest saint. We are all potential saints.

The Pope, as Successor to St. Peter, is the highest ranking bishop on earth. However, he is just a mortal man like the rest of us.

My guess is they are Bible alone Christians so I would simple answer them by saying we are just doing what the Bible tells us to do.
Romans 13:7 Pay to all what is due them—taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.
Mary said “Be it done to me accord to your Word” and gave birth to our Lord and Savior. Is there any greater work any other human being (except Jesus of course) performed on this earth?
1 Timothy 5:17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching; 18 for the scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves to be paid.”
The Pope is our elder who leads something like 1.2 billion Catholics throughout the world. If that task is not worthy of double honor I’m not sure what is?

Hope this helps,

God Bless

It’s really a matter of common sense, however, your friend has been conditioned against this common sense.
  1. Regarding Mary. She’s the mother of Jesus Christ. Imagine your friend was a devout Christian living just after the time of Christ’s Resurrection and Ascension, yet before Mary went to heaven. If your friend say Mary walking down the street, would he treat her just like any other common person? Or would he treat her as a Queen Mother (aka the Mother of his King)? Of course, he would treat her as royalty!
  2. in regards to the Pope, he is Christ’s Prime Minister. Do the British people show the Queen’s Prime Minister respect (or st least the Office, if they don’t like the person)? Of course. So the same is with Catholics. We respect the OFFICE of the Pope, even if we do not like the individual who is currently holding that Office. Furthermore, whether Protestants admit it or not, they often treat their pastors in a similar fashion to the way we treat the Pope. The only difference is that there are over 1 billion of us and typically only at most thousands of followers of a protestant preacher. If you doubt me, just look at the respect & following Billy Graham received has he toured the world. He even had his own audience with Queen Elizabeth II because SHE wanted to meet with him. It’s really no different with the Pope.
Therefore, it really is just a matter of common sense.

God Bless

Good point. The first is based on merit whereas the second is based on office, irrespective of merit (we’ve had Popes with a wide range of merits).

We honor Mary because she’s the mother of Jesus.

The Pope is the leader of our faith. So of course he’s popular and respected.
With proof
Please recognize this for the ridiculous request that it is. Ask your friend why his own pastor is held in esteem and to give “proof”. It’s silly.

Don’t be sucked in to defending something you have NO need to defend.

Do you have a mom? Is she special to you in a way that is different from, say, the people who sit in your Algebra class?

What about a dad? A favorite Uncle?

We all have people for whom we have special respect.

“Well, like, dude, Mary was specially prepared to be the mother of this really cool dude, and the dude told that Peter fellow to take care of things for him”

🤣😱😜
