On the divisive topic of immigration reform, the latest Rasmussen Reports national opinion survey found at least some common ground among the general public.

A similar number (66%) believe it doesn’t make sense to debate new immigration laws until we can first control our borders and enforce existing laws. Just 21% disagree with that approach. More…

What this proves is that a lot of people don’t know how the immigration system “work” (Hint: it DOESN’T) and are in denial about how to solve the problem. Having a piecemeal approach will NOT work to solve the problem. There must be a comprehensive solution that deals with the border, who’s here now and the demand for entry. There must also be regular updates to the law to deal with the real world. Then and only then will be get a handle on the immigration issue. It’s not a once and for all thing. It needs the constant care and attention of lawmakers.

And I do agree that we need to do more to secure the borders AND the ports, so don’t anyone imply that I believe in open and free immigration. I don’t know of anyone who does but if anyone does, then they’re a fool.

Before I left school for a time (I have since gone back), I would take classes and fail them- over and over again. I would take too much or classes that simply were too hard in areas I’m not good at. My approach to it was all wrong- I kept trying to make my approach work, but it never did. Finally my GPA got so bad I had to leave school for awhile. When I came back, I changed my strategy and things are working out just fine now.

It’s the same concept with immigration laws. The ones currently in place simply are not working- there is no trying to enforce them- they can’t be enforced. Current immigration laws make it nearly impossible for someone to come here legally, and our borders are not impenetrable. Unless they put someone inspecting every inch of our border, and search everything that crosses our borders that could carry a person, people are going to get across. Passports and Visas can be forged. People will find a way over here illegally if they want to be here bad enough.

We have never really tried to enforce the immigration laws. So your analogy doesn’t fit this situation. People who live in border states know that.

Hey, I have an idea! Let’s actually try to enforce the laws we have before we write more laws we won’t enforce? 😉
