Hello, I’m interested in joining RCIA however I’m not sure if my father would approve of this choice and he might not let me go to mass if he doesn’t. I was curious what age you must be to join RCIA without parental consent and how you’d do so…

As long as you’re a minor you owe obedience to your parents. If they approve of you becoming Catholic then age isn’t an issue. If they oppose it, however, you’ll need to wait until you’re an adult and/or out of the house. Perhaps it will be something to pursue when you go to college.

In the meantime, you can learn more about Catholicism, pray, and deepen your relationship with the Lord.

If you are not legally an adult and live “under their roof” then you owe obedience to them. So I suggest you do some research then go to him and explain your desire to learn more and see if he approves. Know a little bit first in order to have a good discussion on the topic. Respect his answer. If he doesn’t allow it, then continue to research the faith by reading books and studying the basics. Then once you are an adult, you can start RCIA.

Your local parish will want your parents to approve if you are under 18.
