I am really enjoying my RCIA class and am looking forward to my confirmation. I took the class a couple of years ago, but didn’t have the opportunity to finish properly, so it feels like I’ve been waiting a million years.

I know young girls wear white dresses with tiaras, gloves, and veils, and things like that for their first communion. I have read that business professional attire is appropriate for adults and it doesn’t matter what color you wear. Would it be appropriate for me to wear white also? I wouldn’t wear a wedding dress with a train or anything like that, but just a nice simple (obviously modest) white dress. I am also interested in wearing a mantilla. Sometimes when I think about the Eucharist, I get lightheaded looking forward to it, so I want my first time to be quite special. 😊

Probably the best people to ask would be your RCIA team. They can tell you what is customary in your parish.

If you are being baptized, you will likely put on a white garment of some sort after the baptism, so what you wear underneath it won’t really matter.

The advice I give to the folks at my parish being received into the Church is that if they want to use this as a reason to buy new clothes, it certainly qualifies, but isn’t in any way mandatory. They should wear something nice and suitable for church in a color and style they like. I don’t know if you’re thinking about a long dress, but I would say it should be a regular length (around your knees rather than around your ankles).

In terms of a head covering, keep in mind that you’re going to have oil applied to your forehead. You don’t want something that will have to be pushed out of the way or stained by the chrism.

Great advice from Suscipe.

If you’re being confirmed as an adult with a class of younger folk, be less formal. If you wear a mantilla, make sure it doesn’t cover your forehead (most don’t, anyway).

And please post pics! At least what you’re considering wearing. This isn’t CAF Project Runway, not am I going to critique any choice. I’m just curious. 😃

PS

Welcome home, and I mean that with all of my heart. I waited too long to be Confirmed, myself. I waited to “be sure,” and not treat it as a “rite of passage.”

A nice white dress sounds lovely; it will be the Easter Vigil after all and white will be everywhere. There shouldn’t be a problem with a mantilla, however you may be the only one wearing one and I don’t know how you would feel standing out like that. P.S. Jesus is more excited and waiting for you in the Eucharist!

Both where I grew up and where I live now, we have confirmations at both the Easter Vigil and in November, around the Feast of Christ the King.

We ask our Confimandi to wear white because red is often harder to find.
No head coverings for us though. Our parish doesn’t promote it, clearly yours does or you wouldn’t be considering it.
We ask the men/boys to wear red ties and a white dress shirt. Easy enough to accomplish. If your parish is an immersion parish you’ll be soaked at Baptism and should wear something casual under your baptismal garment (which is usually a bleached muslin robe that the parish will provide). Then you can change into your finery. No fancy hairdo’s. They’ll be toast! LOL As has been said, your RCIA director is the best person to ask all of these questions. They might even share photos with you from past years. The bottom line is, you can wear whatever you would wear for a special Mass of any kind. What matters most is your disposition and the graces you will receive!
What an exciting time for you! God bless!
