I’m almost done with RCIA, but getting increasingly frustrated at having to miss the dismissals. The time they’re put at is just bad for me, I’ve been trying my best to make it but I simply haven’t been able. I would really like some study or something to make up for missing this. Is there anything someone can suggest?

Talk with the priest or religous director but a good supplement might be Catholic Home Study out of Missouri. They’re a mail order non-profit and have resources that teach the Catholic faith. The web address is:

amm.org/chss/chss.asp

Good luck and God be with you:)

The dismissals are for breaking open the word, having the opportunity to read and reflect on the readings, homily, and prayers at the Mass. I don’t see it as something that can be learned from a book, especially when it comes to talking about the ideas from the homily. On your own you could spend time with the Sunday readings. Take a look at liturgy.slu.edu/ for information about the readings, prayers, and reflection questions. But if you could arrange your schedule in order to join the other catechumens it would be to your benefit.

If there was anything I could do, believe me, I would. But I just can’t get there on Sunday mornings - there’s no transit, no one can take me, and with the winters up here I just don’t feel safe walking.

This is not an official RCIA dismissal study, but at least it’s something.

You are missing out on much, by not participating with the other catechumens and your RCIA leader. Is your RCIA leader willing to meet with you privately for B.O.W. some other time of the week, perhaps half an hour before the catechetical sessions?

I hope you are still able to attend Mass sometime on Sunday, or on Saturday evening.

I wonder whether your RCIA group could use Skype to allow you to be included? I know there may be practical issues. I don’t know if there are theological reasons why this would not be proper. I defer to the knowledge of those who know more.

The parish just is not well organized - it’s hard enough making sure they get all the paperwork and remember to get the sponsorship stuff together and the stupid conditional baptism and whatnot. I keep asking and getting told that they’ll find someone that’ll get me a ride next week. I’m happy to go through the process, but getting someone else to do something around here without me bugging them constantly is nearly impossible!

Have you asked your sponsor to help you, or to help find someone who can?

My sponsor live out of town and doesn’t know a lot of people in the parish (we’re both in a field that involves moving a lot).
