RCIA for children ... DVD ideas?

Hi friends,

I’m looking for a DVD set (or online series/interactive app etc) to supplement the RCIA for children (aka RCIC) class I’m teaching. I prefer…no, I LOVE in person classroom instruction. We’ve been at it since September, one class per week for between 1-2.5 hrs each time. However summer break is about to start and I know I can make up a lot of time with some at-home study on DVDs. It’s a few 6th graders and 8th graders. They need to be prepped for First Penance, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. We use the St Joseph Baltimore Catechism No 2

I already worked very closely with the fantastic DRE, and our Pastor is amazing as well. I just like to go with a few options of well recommended series when I asked to order something.

Fr. Barron’s series. We use them in RCIA.

The Catholicism series by Fr. Barron might be a bit too advanced for kids. He is speaking to adults not kids. I used it with 8th graders and some of them were bored with it since they didn’t understand all the theological language. Yet it is a very good program. I use it over the summer with my RCIA, but as I said the kids seems a bit bored with it although the adults love it.

You might look into using some secular movies that have certain theological themes, although unintended. Recent movies like Malificent show conversion and repentance. Of course there is The Chronicles of Narnia series. Show the Son of God video or go to You Tube to find plenty of videos on the faith that could be geared to that age group. Then after viewing, get a discussion going. There are several books out that take movies and connect it to religious themes. I don’t have the name of them here at home, but I am sure you can Google it.

Thank you!! Yes I used Fr Barron’s DVDs during the school year and you were correct, they seemed a little bored…or just sleepy perhaps even though I am completely riveted by them.

I’m confused. Are you planning to have parents purchase DVDs, watch and teach their kids lessons at home?
