RCIA in different cities?

I am Christian (non-denominational) but have always attended a catholic church with my scout troop when I was younger and with a group of friends now that I am in college. Recently I have decided that I’d like to go ahead with the RCIA program so I can be baptized because attending mass without it just isn’t right.

The issue: I am currently attending college but I graduate this coming December. So I could start RCIA here, but then I don’t know what city I’ll be in as it depends on where I get my first job.

The Question: As to avoid looking very foolish, will the church be ok with me completing this program at two different parishes? (They could end up being in different states). I have been told that I could wait until I know where I will be for a prolonged period of time, but waiting another year to begin this process seems very foolish.

So is RCIA something I could do in more than one place or is it more beneficial to wait?

There should be nothing wrong with starting RCIA at a parish where you are now and then having the pastor communicate with the pastor of the parish where you will be moving to. He will even be able to help you find a parish in the new city, so you are all set to go when you get there.

Yes, and be practical make a log or diary of dates attended and subject matter (subject titles are fine). Usually one of the RCIA Team members writes a letter stating you attended X sessions of RCIA. Also - you will need to complete the paper work and keep a copy which usually includes a Baptismal certificate and a RCIA application copy, which is used to review marriage status. If you have any marriage issues you will need that paperwork also. When you enter a second Parish late the issue becomes making sure you are eligible to receive sacraments. Typically the issue is past marriages, and missing baptismal certificates which create problems. In many cases the Priest will not be directly involved often a volunteer DRE (Director of Education) handles these issues

This happens more than people realize. Yes – jump into RCIA now! Inform your first RCIA leader about your plans. Ask your first one to keep a record of the topics you cover, and forward it and proof of your Rite of Welcoming to your new parish when you move (and contact the second RCIA leader at your earliest opportunity). Get an official copy of your baptismal record. Continue attending Mass – and enjoy your continuing journey of conversion!
