I was going to talk to my sister’s priest (long ago they moved) but I got a bit of gruff from the one person who books appointments. It was like you will not get any special treatment…I never asked for any. I was told rcia is only done at the church you will attend? Is that true?

It put me off…I will attend the bigger church in the next county…

Did anyone experience this?

Call and make an appointment to talk to the priest. Don’t tell this person why, just that you need to talk to the priest. Then tell the priest you would like to attend rcia and want him to personally contact the person who leads the rcia. Hopefully it is not the same person who books his appointments. Sadly, one of the parishes I went to, it was the same person 😛

Sorry you had this experience. Keep in mind that one receptionist does not a parish make. Talk to the priest himself, find out who to contact about RCIA and you will quickly find out who can help you. Unfortunately, not everyone who you will come in contact with is a model Catholic. It’s just like the rest of the world. Pray for the person who gave you a snappy answer and move forward in your quest for the truth. Make it easy on your self to get and keep your appts. for RCIA classes. May God bless you on your journey of faith.

Sorry that you had a negative experience. 😦 I’ve long believed that the person who answers the parish phones has one of the most important positions with regards to evangelization. Their demeanor makes a huge difference in people’s impression of the parish (and even the Catholic Church in general).

How RCIA is handled can vary from place to place. Where I am at, several parishes have a combined RCIA program. I know of other locales that send their RCIA candidates and catechumen to a larger parish nearby for formation. But, for the most part, it is handled at the local parish. You would have to talk to the pastor of your parish to hash things out. If you wanted to go to another parish for RCIA, you would need both him and the priest of the parish with the RCIA program to be on board. And they would likely want to know your reason.

Try not to let it discourage you. I know a guy who went to two parishes that tried to discourage him from joining the Church before finally finding a parish that was willing to welcome him. That should never happen, but unfortunately, it does from time to time. It’s definitely a test of your resolve, but continuing on despite the obstacles is definitely worth it.

I will say a prayer for you.

As a NORM, yes;

If you have a specific problem with that; call the parish; insist on an appointment [kindly but firmly] saying ONLY that it is a PERSONAL MATTER

When you meet with the priest be prepared [candid; facts and charity demanded here] just WHY it is you wish to attend RCIA at a different parish.

[KEEP recoreds of nmaes, and dates of everyone you speak too]

IF you are turned down and you still feel your case warrants it; THEN write a letter to your local Bishop expressing ALL that has transpired; and WHY you feel an exception ought to be made.

Again Brief, factual, with names and dates, content [brief] od what transpired and above all charity:thumbsup:

Know friend that you will have to have a VALID reason beyond personal preference if you are to succeed in this endeavor.

PRAY much,

Patrick [PJM]
