Ok so I am finishing my classes for conversion this year. So when I am given a sponsor in the RCIA program is that the same thing as a godparent in the church since im only 14?

Love and God Bless,
Tommy

Is your catholic faith important to you?
Should your potential mate share your faith & values?
Looking for fellowship with other catholic singles?

If you are already baptized (converting from another Christian community with valid Baptism), you will choose a sponsor for your reception into the Catholic Church.

If you have never been baptized, the sponsor you choose will also be your godparent for Baptism. You do not need two separate people to serve as godparent/sponsor.

you will probably have a sponsor who accompanies you on the journey while you are attending classes, sharing the scripture, and for the intial rites in the process. The godparent takes over at Easter (for those who have not yet been baptized). The sponsor you had for the first months of the journey may become the godparent at Easter (or the Confirmation sponsor for those already baptized) but you may choose a new person as godparent, if they qualify otherwise (not a parent of the candidate, not under canon law penalty, fully initiated Catholic adult living in accord with Church teaching, including laws on marriage). For children, the parents or another relative are often the sponsors for the first part of the process, and they choose the godparent or Confirmation sponsor for the initiation sacraments.

Welcome home!

So if I am already baptized in another church I dont receive godparents?

if you have already been validly baptized you are a member of the Church, so won’t have godparents, although you are not in full communion. That will come about when you are confirmed, and you will have a sponsor for that sacrament who, like a godparent, is a mentor in the faith. You will make a profession of faith and receive holy communion for the first time during the same ceremony (unless the pastor or bishop decides that you receive communion, preceded by first confession, sometime before confirmation). If you have a sponsor who accompanies you to the classes and other parts of the preparation, that person may be the Confirmation sponsor, or you me choose another person who qualifies (same requirements as for godparents).
