Ok well, I am FINALLY going to begin RCIA after two long years. Most of you are probably somewhat familiar with me…I come and go…but quick synopis family is Methodist, girlfriend is Catholic, God called and whatnot, now I want to be Catholic for many reasons, mostly intellectual and spiritual. However, I informed my mother of my choice and she said it was up to me but cried saying she promised to raise me Methodist. So here I am stuck at a crossroads. I will goto RCIA but if I finish it I will need alot of help. My grandmother will hate this as well as others I know. I feel so stuck. Help!

Trust that Christ is calling you to the fullness of faith, and where He has called He will not fail you. The “crossroads” you feel stuck at could be a test for you to persevere in your desire to draw closer to Him. You will have other crossroads in your faith walk, and I believe not only will you find peace in this walk, but you may find that your mom and grandma will see through your example that what they might fear for is unfounded. Know that we are praying for you!

Listen to God! He’ll show you the Way! I promise you that if you pray with Faith!

Good luck in RCIA!

I would reassure her that she did (I am assuming) raise you Methodist and thank her for what she has done to bring you to Christ. Keep her updated on what your spiritual life is about as you move along. The best thing to do is keep letting her know you are not abandoning Christ but following Him.

Invite her to come with you to a couple meetings, she will see what it is about and not think you are going off to a cult. She wont have to convert or anything but maybe will understand better. Share what you are going through, it is better to share your experience, than to just state it and let there be tension.

God Bless

Snowman,

Congratulations on beginning your journey in RCIA. As someone who went through the process last year, I can assure you that you’re in for an interesting and exciting journey.

I’ve faced similar obstacles from my family. In fact, I have yet to tell my family that I’ve converted to Catholicism, since I’m pretty sure they’re going to disown me…

However, I went through a similar thought process as you describe: Is this all worth it? Is this a “call” I need to heed?

For me, the answer was a very clear and definitive, “yes”… I can’t answer for you, but I can suggest a few things that might help you as you discern this call to the Church:
  1. Pray about it daily…simply ask God: “God, show me the way you want me to go.” You’ll be surprised how well that prayer will be answered.
  2. Spend some time in front of the Tabernacle in your parish. Simply sitting quietly or reading the Bible or other spiritual reading was a powerful thing for me, as well…
Keep seeking!!!

God bless,
JP Augustine

Well it looks like your mom respects your choice, that is a good sign, there are many who come on these forums with their conversion story and how they no family backing them at all.

Congrats! I just started too!

I haven’t told my family although they know that I have been attending Mass for over a year now. I was really nervous about it, but they all decided that as long as I was happy they were too. I was raised Methodist by my Catholic mother who didn’t want me to feel forced into it like she had. I hope that you do great with it. Life sure is an interesting journey.

I came into the church at the Easter Vigil 2004. That is one of the most beautiful services of the year. I invited my mom, she came, and was so inspired that it overcame any prejudices she had against the Catholic Church. It is such a beautiful celebration of the resurrection that no Christian of any denomination can walk away without feeling inspired.
I know for us RCIA started in Sept and reception comes at the Easter Vigil. It such a time that will change your life. God Bless You!
