Re-Baptism of Daniel Ortega

I am not sure where this should go, but on the news tonight they were talking about Daniel Ortega, the guy from Nicaragua and how he has changed his attitude towards the Catholic Church, and was re-baptized in the Church.
Now, I know once baptized, always baptized, but has anyone ever heard of the Church re-baptizing a Catholic just because he says he now supports the Church he was already baptized in.???
My non-Catholic friend was here listening and asked me about this, so I just said if a priest did do this it wasn’t necessary.

I was about to post a question on this too! The news said he was “re-baptized” by the Church and they blessed his marriage. The marriage thing I think I’ve got…but re-baptized? I’ve only heard of conditional baptism if someone isn’t sure or can’t prove a prior baptism. There’s no such thing as “re” baptism! Er??? Maybe news just got it wrong?
 
Hi Glad someone else is wondering about this. I got the marriage ok too.

A quick Google search did not turn up anything about Ortega being “rebaptized.” Sounds to me like someone has this story garbled.
 
It appears that he was somewhat separated from the Church, if not formally excommunicated. Probably someone is using rebaptized to incorrectly describe his reentry to the Church. i

I heard it said twice that way on CNN tonight…but it surely wouldn’t be the first time someone in the media said something wrong about a Catholic practice. 🙂
