LOL…I don’t think so…I attended a UMC for a short time when I lived in Clearlake Calif…the Friends Meeting was “prepatory” and met once a month…I didn’t always feel like driving over the hill to Santa Rosa Monthy Meeting…I enjoyed her ministry very much. She and I voluteered at hospice together…I still have the RSV version of the Bible she gave me. But then Friends have had female “ministers” for most if not all of your short 400 year history.

Any idea where she stands on issues dealing with morality: contraception, abortion and homosexuality, the protection of marriage between one man and one women, etc.?
 
I used to attend a UMC with a female pastor who I thought was outstanding. After I moved away, I still kept in touch for awhile and last I heard they had an all-female pastoral staff (not a conscious attempt to, just that the best qualified applicants at that time all happened to be women).

I myself led several services at my previous church (not the Methodist one) and had nothing but positive feedback.

Where I live, they are doing such a wonderful ministry for the poor, and they really go out of their way for the kids also. I don’t think it is per say Methodsim at work here that is attracting me. It is what I am seeing, and how these things are communicated to those who visit. I have given my time there because I felt the dedication to these things were more than just words spoken. There was action behind the words. I wanted to help them out. They let me.

I never gave thought to how long this practice came about. My interest was that she spoke of things that she actually did herself personally. I’m afraid there are many that are too scared to even come into her church but do send donations. She told me that she gets plenty of silent support in many of the efforts they are trying to tackle, but not as many who would willingly come in and be a part of it in person.
They do an amazing amount of work with the few volunteers they have. She gives me the feeling that one day, we won’t have these kind of barriers as we do now to joining together for a cause that we can all believe in. She helps me to see that it could happen.

I have not gotten to that point with her yet, but I do know that she is very very committed to helping any woman keep their baby and would do anything she could to make sure they would not abort. I think this is where she may need help from catholics who have been doing this longer, or from others also. Mormons maybe? I don’t know. I think if she was not thought of as on par to someone who is intrinsically evil, maybe she could help more women keep their child.
She surely wants to.
I don’t know about the other questions yet. I think I am meant to help her out, not really looking at a conversion experience. I am just a person willing to help at this point. I will ask though.

I felt an amazing sense of calm when I was there. It was enough to make me want to do what I could in my own small way in return.
 
Working to leave the world a better place, help some people out…nurture and love kids…sounds good.

I don’t now, are you a member of this church? does the church and this pastor follow the tenets of the body? do you have a reason for concern?

  1. No, not a member of any religious church. I do not believe in the Christian God.
  2. I have no idea what the structure is for the UMC, and I would not be surprised if I found it to be fractured and split, and possibly with a ton of disagreements about it in all levels.
  3. Not so far. Just hoping they are not hurting kids or trying to convince the elderly to be done with it before their time, and well- all that stuff.
My concerns are ones of things they may be involved with that could be very harmful, as I see in some cults that refuse medical treatment for children. Or encourage women to stay with a man who beats them type of thing. I can not help a cause no matter how good if that is part of the picture. Or total denial of science… Same thing. I can’t do it then.

do you have some reason for believing this particular church or pastor are involved in such things? you don’t give much information about them, but it does not sound like any Methodists with which I am familiar.

I’m not familiar with any of your denominations. I have some really weak or watered down protestant christians as friends over my life, but no crazy cultists so far. And, I have never known a Methodist let alone a UMC member. I don’t know anything about the rules or regs they follow, or their practices. I do like what I see though.
I’m sure a lot of people that fell into places that ended up being bad did not see it right away. At least the Catholic Church gives you a CCC and tons of reading material so you know what they believe. This is not even a place that gives you a list of “what we believe” or what others in protestant churches call a “faith statement”

I am not trying to stir the pot. I really do like this place, and would not devote my time to her causes if I thought she was a whack job.

I don’t know exactly what to say since you don’t believe in the Christian God, but are on a Catholic forum asking about a Methodist minister who I would presume does believe in the Christian God and would preach to that effect.

If you are looking for a perfect person to minister or preach, teach, etc. before you can believe, well all I can say is God bless. Faith is a gift that can only be accepted and opened by you, despite the shortcomings of those who would help to offer the gift.

I realize that, so does she. I am taking steps. However small they seem to all believers. They are huge steps you can not realize. Well, maybe you can if you try to realize how it is to be me.

Sure there is they have an organizational website. I’m not sure of the rules but google United Methodist Church and it should be the first hit.

As a church the UMC uses postal mailings more then most
 
I used to think UMC meant “Upper Middle Class”. Bob Seger influence in my youth, perhaps. 😉

Anywho, the local UMC has a woman pastor. I know someone on their church council and he says most of their members are neither here nor there about having a woman pastor.
