I am reading the 1982 Reader’s Digest Bible, condensed from the Revised Standard Version. I am curious how many others have read it and what they think of it?

I’ve always been curious about this. Of course they stopped publishing it after the uproar over the idea of condensing the Bible. And I recall jokes about which commandments they were going to edit out.

Didn’t realize it was based on the RSV. I may have to check it out at the library, if they have one.

Question: Does it contain the Deuterocanonical books?

Unfortunately the copy I’m reading does not have the Deuterocanonical books.

I have not heard it and do not understand its appeal. I thought the Good News Bible would have more than adequately filled that market position.

What is left out? It seems that there would be no adequate way to condense the Bible. Are whole books left out or parts of books? I hope there is something to let the reader know what has been left out. While I wouldn’t use it, perhaps it is less intimidating for people who havn’t read the Bible before, and can serve as an introduction.

Yours,
Jessica

So, when we get right down to it, Martin Luther created the first Readers Digest Version of the Bible when he deleted words and verses and books too in order to support his inventions and opinions. But I wonder if Readers Digest added untrue words to their Bible like Luther did?

Luke16:17 says, But it is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the smallest detail of the Law to be done away with.
