I have also seen ratings and have had to wonder how they were calculated. I am familiar with counting multisyllable words and sentences that had commas and other punctuation. I used to have to write health pamphlets and take those factors into consideration. Paraphrastic versions of the Bible, like the Good News Bible, seem to be written to a lower educational level. One Bible that has impressed me in its simplicity is the Bible in Basic Englsh. There are actually two: one that uses an 1,100 word vocabulary and the other that uses a 1,700 word vocabulary. It was written for people who speak English as a second language. I do not think it is written in a 73 book version, but I have only ever seen it as a selection for E-Sword, not in a paper edition.
