How is that for creating a thread that covers both Liturgy and Sacraments?

In an attempt to make this Faith Formation year as awesome as possible, I am already getting busy with planning our sacramental celebrations. My current task is to refresh the Liturgy of the Word at our 1st Holy Communion Masses. For the past five years that I have been planning these liturgies (and perhaps for a while before that) we have been using translations of: Deuteronomy 8, Acts 2:42-47 and Mark 14:12-26.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Just so I know the full story… Are these on Saturdays? During the day? (As opposed to the Sunday liturgy.)

Very good question! This year we are celebrating our 1st HCs on Sat, May 1 - 9, 11 and 2.

Dave,
I would suggest the readings from Corpus Christi. You might also use the readings from the votive Mass of the Holy Eucharist. All of these are found in the Lectionary, of course, so I’ll spare myself the typing 🙂

Remember that the pastor is the one who will be preaching at the Mass (most likely), so the real starting-point should be to ask him which texts he prefers.

Thank you Father. Right after posting the original post I hoped a priest would reply and then I immediately realized there are four priests within 100 yards of me right now. I guess the e-world has made me a little lazy.

Its awesome that you do this. I have such respect for Catechists.

Corpus Christi readings FTW!-this year’s set is EXTRA awesome!

First reading: Passage from Genesis where Melchizedek offers the bread and wine on the altar (on Abraham’s benefit)-can’t beat the foreshadowing here!
Responsorial psalm: “You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek”
Second reading: Passage from 1 Corinthians where Paul gives the first written account of the institution of the Eucharist-“for as often as you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes”
Gospel: Loaves and fishes! (excellent way to get the kids into the readings, and maybe the priest’s homily can touch on its connection with the Eucharistic Feast)

I say go for it! Could the “Laud, O Zion” also be done then?

My little angels (lectors) read these readings this weekend and “knocked them out of the park”! 1st Holy Communions are my little slice of heaven on earth. The combination of awesome priests, wonderful families and a loving parish really let the Light shine.
