Readings not from the NAB

On Passion Sunday and Good Friday our choir sang the Passion from Luke and John (respectively). We had trouble following along - I initially thought they did the wrong Gospel. It turns out they used a different (and very poor) translation, even worse than the NAB.

Can someone point me to the Canon law section or other document that might address this? I assume there are no “liberties” allowed when singing the Gospel.

Someone else should be able to do what you literally ask, but it should not make any difference. There is no room for paraphrase versions of scripture as a matter of common sense, and I would start with what you are bound to hear on Pentecost upcoming: “These men cannot be drunk, because it is only nine o’clock in the morning.” Obviously, they were all wearing their digital watches. One only has to be taught once that the third hour of the morning means approximately the third hour after dawn, and Jesus also did not die at three o’clock in the afternoon, thank you. Assuming that people are too dumb to learn this fact which I knew when I was perhaps nine years old, and need to be babied with foolish anachronisms, is a greater evil than a false assumption that we are succeeding in evangelization more surely by dumbing everything down.
