Ready to join a Religious Order, but need help!

They seem like a great group, but I’m not really drawn to them. I am looking more for a Missionary Order in the larger sense - like a growing and orthodox Maryknoll. Unfortunately, they are not a growing Order. Neither would I consider them very orthodox.

I am still very curious about the SVD’s, but few people have been able to give me insights.

As an organization they are objectively–and admittedly-- disorganized, not living their charism, not taking care of their members, and not evangelizing their missions. These are things that they say they are working on. So in looking at this order someone would need to decide if they want to be part of a “fixer upper” or not. I don’t know if their vocations director would tell someone that but most, if not all of their priests in mission would. There are many priests who want to fix the problems and live the charism and others who do not.

I think that the detraction in what you are saying really needs to end. Pride of thinking we have it all figured out is very definitely not good.

The only person here who seems to be detracting is you. You are accusing me of “being prideful and thinking I have it all figured out” I suggest you look at your own behavior before addressing others.

christcnection1 was asking for (name removed by moderator)ut on orders. I have first hand experience with one of the orders he is considering. After he asked for more information than I had provided in my first two posts I emailed him and we took the conversation private so as to not air dirty laundry in public. I felt as though a few statements about the order in general would be fine. When he wanted specifics I saw no reason to continue it in public.

Letting people know in a post or two about an order having problems isn’t prideful or a bad thing to do.

Do you not think it is a good idea to let someone know of potential problems in an order that they are considering trusting their vocation to? Surely you don’t think it would have been best to remain quiet and not tell the truth. Everything I said is truthful there is no reason to try and silence the truth.

I would have emailed you this privatly but since you addressed me publically I chose to respond likewise. If you have any other suggestions please send them in a private message.

I would add one more order to the list. That is the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. They do much missionary work all over the world. They serve in the USA, Central and South America, Africa, Indonesia and SE Asia.

Indeed, I was out of line. And I have many many sins of pride…we all do. No doubt about it since it is the root of all sin. So, I apologize. I have no “excuse” but this…it hurts me personally, (pride again), that our Catholic Faith takes so many hits these days and even more so it hurts when fellow Catholics do. I’m not saying that you took a hit on the Church…just that it struck me that way, and I apologize. Hindsight is always 20/20 and I pray continuously for better current 20/20 vision.

I, as well as several dear friends, have had an amazing experience with a very holy SOLT Priest. They are each like a one man army. it is truly a beautiful Order. God bless you.

I’ve thought of a couple of Orders that may interest you, if you haven’t seen them already:

The Order of Saint Camillus (often called Camillians) - medical missionaries, founded in the sixteenth century.

(That’s a page from the United Kingdom and Ireland; I’m not sure whether there are any Camillian houses in America.)

The Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy (the Mercedarians) - whose mission is to proclaim the Gospel to those in physical or psychological captivity. Founded in the thirteenth century to ransom Christian hostages.

The Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate have semi-contemplative, missionary and contemplative branches. They are Marian, Eucharistic, Traditional, prayerful, joyful, and they take the life very seriously. I’d say their living founder is very spiritual, too.
 
The Capuchins are well-established, orthodox, and dedicated to serving the poor. By the grace of God, they’re also experiencing a significant growth in vocations in the U.S. If you’re interested in missionary work, the friars of the St. Augustine province are very committed to their mission in Papua New Guinea-- though I’m partial to the province of St. Conrad!
