A couple of weeks ago I could have sworn I heard someone on Catholic Answers say Real Player was evil. What do they mean by this?

I find Real Player 10 just fine IF you shut down and uncheck everything you can when first installed. Disable its “Message Center”, I find it doesn’t come back. Check Real Player to play ONLY .rm .ram .ra Real video/audio files. Also you don’t need to register and provide an Email, just hit CANCEL at the very end there when it asks for an Email. Real Player 10 works just fine for me. The compression ratio for its video/audio is also quite good.

He could make the same complaint about QuickTime or WinAmp, these also want to become the default player for everything when first installed. Just use the options and uncheck what you don’t want. Takes just a little effort.

There is a program called Real Alternative if you don’t want to use Real Player.

Hello,

Why couldn’t he have just said “I am computer illiterate and I just wish that they would make a program easy enough for even me to use” 😃

Seriously, he has some valid points, but most can be resolved if you just take an extra five minutes of time when installing Real Player. Or just use an alternative. There are other players like Real Alternative, and codecs that will allow play in other players like Windows Media Player, Winamp, etc.

If you don’t Real formats, use others such as mp3, wav, or ogg. Ask others to support more open formats also. I prefer ogg vorbis myself.
