USMC:
So, let me make sure I understand how the “magisterium in action” works.
Give it a rest.

The Ordinary Magisterium is the teaching of the Catholic Bishops, world-wide. Catholic Bishops world-wide welcome Orthodox Christians to take communion.

That’s how it is. Sorry you don’t like it.

One point I should like to mention:
Is that Catholics are allowed to receive communion at Orthodox Churches ONLY if there is not Catholic Church around.
I would assume that it would be the same with the Orthodox. That they are permitted to attend Catholic Mass if no Orthodox service is available (though I don’t know for sure.)
The Missal is not saying “Alright if you’re Orthodox, you are allowed to receive every day if you like.” I think the Bishops realize that the schism is a big thing. And they’re not trying to ignore it by saying “hey, you’re whole orthodox church on west street, come join us at mass” Because if the Missal truly did mean “any orthodox can receieve any time he wishes at a catholic mass” than well…im sure you know what im getting at.
IRREGARDLESS of all that i’ve said above:
A heretic may in fact be one thing, but what the Magisterium is saying is that not all “heretics” are refused communion.
i would sooner call them schismatics than heretics though.
I mean, if the Catholic Church teaches that the Orthodox have valid sacraments, it makes no sense to then say, well you’re heretics and you can’t receieve OUR valid sacraments. Go get your own valid sacraments.
So what am I saying? The Magisterium defines what a heretic yet they still have valid sacraments.
So I’ll leave you guys to your discussion 🙂
Sounds like you guys need to ask this question in the Ask an Apologist thread 🙂 Refer them to this thread.

We must distinguish between theology and internal discipline. We, the Catholics, will welcome any Orthodox Christian to communion. Some Orthodox Bishops may place restrictions on their own communicants as to when and under what circumstances they can receive communion in a Catholic Church. That, however, is their affair, and not ours.

Similarly, in those Orthodox Churches where I have personal experience, Catholics are welcomed, no questions asked – but the Catholic Church has some restrictions on when and under what circumstances we can receive.

Actually, it comes pretty close to saying that – with the caveat that Orthodox Christians are to abide by the discipline of their Churches.

As I say, we welcome them, but their Bishops may impose restrictions on them.

We don’t “poach” if that’s what you mean. But we do welcome them.

I think the Magisterium has already answered. Orthodox Christians are welcome to communion in Catholic churches.

Vern, I was planning to “give it a rest” as you asked, because I thought surely you finally saw the truth; but now I see you continuing in this error and even proclaim it to others as though it is the official teaching of the Church. You have no idea what you are talking about. I have shown you magisterial document after magisterial document - all issued by Popes, and you have completely ignored them, and even rejected them, because of something that was written in a missal that has an imprimatur!

Maybe you don’t know this, but imprimaturs today mean very little. I could show you books that explicitly deny the divinity of Jesus that have an imprimatur. Let’s face it, many wolves are in hight places today, and there imprimaturs mean nothing. I don’t think anyone on these boards is ignorant to that fact.

A book with an imprimatur - even if the book itself is without error - does not become part of the magisterium (the official teaching of the Church). The Bishop who gave the imprimatur may be a part of the magesterium (if he is in union with Pope), but the book is not, regardless of any imprimatur.

Magesterial documents are things such as papal encyclicals, or Church councils, etc., not every book with an imprimatur. Surely you know that, right?

So you are not “obeying” the magesterium when you are teaching exactly contrary to what the Pope has taught. I quoted many Popes in our discussion (including John Paul II’s encyclical from 2004), and everyone of them disagreed with what you are saying. Yet you reject these true magesterial documents for a mere book, simply because it has an imprimatur.

You were misled by the Bishop (he will answer for that). But now, rather than realizing that he was wrong, you are defending this false teaching and claiming that it is an official teaching of the Church. The Bible speaks of certain evil men as “deceiving and being deceived”. You were deceived by the Bishop, and now you are attempting to deceive others.

I will end with the quote from John Paul II from last year. You will then have the choice to agree with what he said, or reject it and side with a mere book, simply because it has an imprimatur.

John Paul II Ecclesia De Eucharista (45): “While it is never legitimate to concelebrate in the absence of full communion, the same is not true with respect to the administration of the Eucharist under special circumstances, to individual persons belonging to Churches or Ecclesial Communities not in full communion with the Catholic Church. In this case, in fact, the intention is to meet a grave spiritual need for the eternal salvation of an individual believer, not to bring about an intercommunion which remains impossible until the visible bonds of ecclesial communion are fully re-established”.

You are teaching that “Catholics will welcome any Orthodox Christian to communion”. That is exactly what John Paul II said was not to happen.

When we first started our discussion I assumed you were just “invincibly ignorant” (to you a popular phrase), and maybe you were at the time. But now you have been informed. If you continue to spew forth you perverse teaching you will be held accountable before God on judgment day. You are now without excuse. The Church has spoken (Mt 18:17) and if you refuse to hear the Church, like the Bishop that gave the imprimatur, then you too will be relegated to the status of a “heathen”.

You now have the ability to use your free with to accept what the Church teaches, or to reject it and follow the bishop to perdition. I hope you make the right choice because “it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God”.

The Church welcomes Orthodox Christians to receive communion with us. That’s how it is.

I’m sorry you don’t like it. Perhaps you should write to the Pope.
