Reality check: what are you doing to spread the faith?

An apostolate is a special ministry aimed at spreading the gospel. Sort of like a “mission”. I see it as a “particular” way to spread the gospel. For example, if you lead a bible study, that could be your apostolate.

I am a lay member of The Society of Our Mother of Peace. Our apostolate is doing door to door evangelization in parishes that are losing membership. This is a two hour a week commitment, plus daily Mass, daily prayer and spiritual reading. Sort of like the Legion of Mary.We also meet weekly in groups for spiritual guidance with a Brother or a Sister S.O.M.P. The Priests,Brothers and Sisters in the Society of Our Mother of Peace also do missionary work in Africa. They are based in Missouri, ouside of St.Louis and outside of Springfield,Mo.

Bring my Catholic faith into conversations every chance I get (without being too pushy) never deny for convience or to keep from causing people a little bit of discomfort, that my reasons for my beliefs about life come from my faith in Jesus Christ and His one true church. Give rosaries and teach how to pray the rosary, and why, to anyone who is interested. Pray my rosary every day and share the good feelings I get from daily prayer to all who will listen, try to let others see Jesus in my actions. I want everyone that I am near to know who I am( follower of Jesus) and what I am (a Catholic Christian) and why I believe (because of my faith in our Lord and His teachings).
God bless,
maggiec

I realized how easy it is to spread the faith the last night. It wasn’t me doing it though. My fiance and I went to a bookstore last night because i wanted to buy “the idoits guide to understanding catholicism”. Anyway, we get to the checkout and the girl asked us if we were catholic. My fiance, who was paying, said no but said that i kind of am. She asked him, “well what are you?” and he answered pentacostal. She got all excited and gave him a high five. She told us all about her church and that we should go and what day and time it is that they hold there services (friday night???) and she was REALLY convincing!!! I wanted to go, but I’m really not into the pentacostal thing, it’s too hyper for me. BUT, my fiance agreed to go to mass with me on Sunday as long as he doesn’t have to take communion or go to confession (he has his beliefs). This whole thing made me think, if that girl was so convincing, then I can be too!!!

Mostly I try to be a good example, although lately I’ve been thinking that I should investigate some of the lay apostolates or third orders in order to do more.

However, what I have been doing recently is something I never did before: TALKING about my faith. I have to credit seeing “The Passion” with lighting a fire under my lukewarm posterior. While it did have a deep effect on me personally, I also noticed that it must have worked the same way on a lot of other people because all of a sudden, it seemed that all American Christians, Catholic or not, were talking about faith! In “politically correct”, dare-not-offend-anyone 21st century America! Just having the courage to talk about it is a major development in this country.

By the way, I was explaining this to one of my cousins visiting from Italy, and when I said that Americans never want to talk about religion, she thought that was the most ridiculous thing in the world. Even Italians who aren’t particularly religious think this way. I would wager that most Europeans just don’t get this whole PC silliness.

My Nana was from Italy, she never understood all that either. She figured since we have freedom of speech we should be able to talk about our beliefs and not be afraid of offending people with other beliefs. She also thought that PC was wiping christianity off the map. She had a point.

I have my online ministry where I write spiritual meditations and share them publicly on the internet. You can check it out at my Divine Love Ministries site (url in my signature.)

I also am upon to doing meditations on a particular topic (if I know anything about it) if people are interested in it. Just let me know.
