Please post in this thread proposals for extra options that should be in a future poll.

I voted yes, probably because I’m not very good at rigour. It isn’t true if there aren’t an infinite number of zeros after the decimal point in the decimal number, but if there are an infinite number of zeros then I would say yes.

I know some people don’t like the idea of an infinite number of anything, but I’m not that fussy. If there can’t be an infinite number of terms in a geometric series, then you can’t ever really truly sum the series. I want to be able to do calculus and sum series. I want to be able to say a certain series can be used to find the answer to ordinary linear differential equations of a single variable without constant coefficients. Therefore, even though I know there are rigorous answers to justify doing such things, I don’t really want to engage in the rigour, I just wanna get going. I just wanna plug ‘n’ chug without a lot of fuss. 🙂

If by “0.0000…?” You mean that at a certain point we have no data, or, it can’t be measured? I would answer “Yes, probably” but not “yes for sure”

If by “0.0000…?” You mean a zero, then a decimal point, followed by an infinite number of zeros, then I would say “yes”

I voted for the 3rd option. Mathematically, 0 divided by any number would be 0. You can prove this by multiplying the solution (0) by the denominator (3) to get the numerator (0). 0 x 3 = 0. You can put an infinite number of zeroes after the decimal and they don’t make a whit of difference.

Philosophically is another matter. I’m not a philosopher but I’ve heard enough of them to know that they can argue sideways from anything to anything. 😃

0/3 is an undefined operation. Since it is undefined you can’t say that 0/3 = anything!

I think it’s 3/0 which is undefined.

0/3 is shorthand for one third of zero. Perhaps PseuTonym could explain why (s)he thinks that could be anything other than zero.

Every second billions of computers in finance, defense, phones, car engines, airliners, etc. divide measurements by constants, and often the measurement is zero, so they divide zero by a constant, and get zero as the result.

Remarkable that anyone in the 21st century could find such basic numeracy absurd.
