There is a new show on A&E called “Family Plot”. In this show a mortuary is the subject. Is it cruel to watch such a show? I viewed it last night, and though, I found it interesting, I wonder if it’s proper to watch things like this for “entertainment”.

I happen to feel that all these “reality shows” are such a huge waste of time, not only for us but for families, and kids. Wouldn’t it be much better to play Scrabble together as a family, read, watch something on Nova or PBS than get caught up in utter ridiculous-ness? I think so, though I realize many might disagree with me, and/or be very caught up in the ooohs and aahhs of it all.

I feel 98% of the time, TV is THE biggest time waster!!! Except for a good “Masterpiece Theatre”, a good football game or EWTN.

I say don’t get caught up in it all!!!

I haven’t seen the show in question but would think that a reality show on A&E would be at least slightly less trashy than the reality shows on other channels. I could be wrong of course.

Most of the reality shows are really bad in general. I was appalled that there was one called “Wife Swap” but I happened to watch an episode and I actually thought it illustrated some good points about family and raising kids. It may have just been that one episode that I saw but it was not at all what I envisioned when I first heard of the show.

I’ve seen Family Plot a couple of times. I don’t think that it’s cruel to watch it, as long as you don’t enjoy the show because of the dead people. I liked the show because it showed how a family acts when they run a business together.

I never watched that show until last night…found if kind of weird but interesting…I might even tune in again. I liked the part where the woman (not so framiler with cast) fixed the older lady up the best she could so the family could view her…

My favorite reality show is Bounty Hunter with Duane 'Dog" Chapman.

I know, reality shows in my opinion are next to soap operas…I know, I know.​

That is the one I viewed last night. It was interesting, how she had to use certain things to reconstruct the woman’s face. I did not “enjoy” seeing the poor departed lady, but I was interested to see how exactly she reconstructed the woman.
I was listening to a sermon and the pastor mentioned that it’s an “art” to being a mortician. I suppose it is.​

I’ve seen Family Plot a couple of times. I don’t think that it’s cruel to watch it, as long as you don’t enjoy the show because of the dead people. I liked the show because it showed how a family acts when they run a business together.​

I did not know they were a family. I should not be surprised that’s actually how funeral homes were operated in the “older days” after the do it yourself arrangements… Except people used to live above the facility.

From what I saw these people work in a mortuary, and last night, it showed the embalmer trying to make a body presentable for viewing by the family. The camara did not show the ladie’s face until after the embalmer fixed her up btw. Apparently, an elderly woman was in a car accident and her face was disfigured and the mortician had a challenge in making this lady presentable. It was odd watching such a thing, really.​

I count Family Plots, Airline, & Survivor among my guilty pleasures.​

Posts like this always come across as so superior and condescending to me. What you are saying is that the things that YOU do are better and more worthwhile than what SOMEONE ELSE does. You might not mean it that way, sparkle, but it’s just so rude. To say that some people might be “caught up in the ooohs and aahhs of it all” implies that you are acting on a higher level, a more enlightened level and would never get “caught up” in something as vain as, for instance, television, or whatever else you deem unworthy.

I’ve probably offended you, even though I didn’t mean to, your post just irritated me. I’m sure you didn’t mean what you said to be uncharitable.

LilyoftheValley, I’ve seen Family Plots a few times. I’m not sure why you think it would be cruel to watch it. From what I’ve seen, bodies are never shown in their entirety, and the point of the show is really the family relationships and operation of a funeral home. I just wish it were a religious funeral home! It’s weird that something revolving around death apparently gives no thought to the afterlife. The employees seem completely secular. But not without compassion.
