Reason for God

Funky question, and with no irreverence intended; Is there a reason for the existance of God (looking past our own needs)? Is it just for His own sake?

I think the only answer could be that He is essence and existence itself and that His non-existence is quite literally impossible for there to exist anything whatsoever.

Well, it is for our sake, seeing as God was perfect before creation and therefore did not gain anything from our creation. He did it out of love for us. As far as God’s existence, I agree with Heuchler. God is existence and essence, so without Him there is no existence.

I think the best we can do to answer this question is study St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica, which states that the metaphysical essence of G-d is the same as His existence. IOW, G-d cannot NOT exist and has no primal cause for His existence, just as G-d reveals to Moses in Exodus: I AM THAT I AM. G-d’s essence is perfect in His eternal existence and, without changing His essence, reveals His perfection through His creation and His love of it.

actually, yea I was thinking in terms of augustine and his proof on the God Who Is. but I wanted to go past that and find a reason for Him having existence since I have a European history teacher at school who likes to bring up this guy called Spinoza who takes one step back and says that God is everything, which really marginalizes God, and I wanted a better explanation from someone who knows more philosophy.
