Receiving Communion for another person?

I have heard of people say that they are receiving communion and offering it for the needs and intentions of another person/persons. They actually receive communion but they pray that the sacrifice of the Eucharist and graces go to another individual who may be in great suffering. I am not sure that I understand exactly what they say and do…what they are praying that God will transfer? Does this have a name? Is it a valid thing to do…I have always wondered.

The graces of Holy Communion are “non-transferable,” so to speak. So to “offer up” your Holy Communion for someone who is in a state of mortal sin would not make it as though the third party had received the sanctifying graces the sacrament dispenses.

On the other hand, we are understandably most prayerful and heart-felt when we have just received Jesus in Holy Communion and so our prayers may be more efficacious then than at other times.

If you have very important prayer intentions, you might present them to God after just having received Holy Communion, in addition to mentioning them in your ordinary prayer.

A person can offer prayers,good works and even Mass intentions for another person, living or dead. You can attempt to obtain an Indulgence for yourself or a person who may be in Purgatory, but not for a living person. You cannot transfer Sacramental Grace received from receiving a Sacrament to another person.
