I have a fairly new devotion to the Holy Souls in Purgatory and was reading that one should offer Holy Communion on behalf of the Holy Souls once a week if possible. How exactly is that done? Is it sufficient to say a prayer before receiving Communion, offering Holy Communion for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory?

Thanks in advance!

I know the Prayer of Saint Gertrude the Great (my Saint’s name for Confirmation) is for the souls in purgatory…

Eternal Father
I offer thee the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those within my home and within my family.
Amen

Although, I am not sure if it should be prayed before or after Communion. So, probably not helpful in answering your question.

I remember years ago we were told that we could say this particular prayer as often as we wanted to at any time.

I sometimes pray after communion…

***Lord, if it be your will, I renounce any claim to the graces I may have recieved in through this holy commuion and ask that they instead be granted to __________. ***

…or something along those lines. I have never heard anything contradictory to my being able to do this. I have in fact, heard much to lead me to believe that this is possible.

I don’t see why reception of communion could not be applied to someone already in purgatory.

I’ve been saying the St. Gertrude prayer when I remember throughout the day. I was just wondering if there was something different one should pray or do in order to receive Communion on behalf of the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

I offer my Holy Communion up for all deceased family members and those in purgatory. Just by saying the above. No special prayer as such. Just an offering to God.

And don’t forget the the Sacrifice of the Altar pours out graces that we can ask to be applied to special intentions, whether we can receive Holy Communion or not.

Say something like: eternal father, through the prayers and intercession of mother mary, i offer to you this holy communion i have just received, for relief and deliverance of all the souls in purgatory, amen

My little girl wrote a letter to Jesus on her 1st Holy Communion day asking if she could offer her Communion up “to free 1 million souls from Purgatory.” She handed it to the priest before Mass so he talked with her about it and asked her to keep this intention in her heart just before and right after receiving Our Lord. He said any words would be just fine so she said, “Dear Jesus, please use my gift to help those souls who need You most and those who have no one else to pray for them.” Wish would have known St. Gertrude’s prayer then!

I’m hoping that kind of offering cleaned out Purgatory that day! Can you imagine what would happen if more innocent ones offer Holy Eucharist for those in Purgatory? WOW! And the cute little thing . . after Mass, she asked Father, “Do you think 1 million was a big enough number? Should I have asked for 2 million?” 👍

:heart:That’s awesome! 👍👍👍
If only we were all like the little children…
